Tips for Buying the Perfect Plus-Size Prom Dress

If you’re like many teens, you’re probably already starting to think and dream about your prom next year. However, you likely also know that finding the perfect dress can be a challenge and is best thought about sooner rather than later.

This can be particularly the case with plus-size fashion, which isn’t always as readily available as we might like. To get you started, here are some tips for buying the perfect plus-size prom dress for you.

Leave Yourself Plenty of Time

You might be overwhelmed by the idea of finding a suitable dress for your big event, but don’t keep putting off shopping. The sooner you start looking at and trying on dresses, the more choices you’ll have and the better chance you’ll have of finding something that’s right for you. Keep in mind that most stores get the bulk of their prom dress stock early in the season. The earlier you browse, then, the more comprehensive the range you’ll have to check out.

It’s also worth looking at quality plus-size dresses online as this will expand your range. Some stores need time to get items delivered, though, so again, don’t leave everything until the last minute. Also, since you may need a dress tailored to fit you correctly, you could need time for a dressmaker to do that work before the prom.

Consider Which Styles Suit Your Body Shape and Colors Work for Your Complexion

As with any clothing you purchase, you want to know your body shape and what suits it when you go shopping. Are you petite or tall, small or large chested, an hourglass, apple, pear, or other shape, and what are your best assets? Consider prom dress styles that will suit your body, whether you want loose, flowing designs or form-fitting gowns that show off your curvy figure.

If you’re aware of your shape and what suits it before you step foot in boutiques, you can narrow down your choices straight away, and you’re not so likely to be pressured into trying on products that don’t work for you by potentially pushy salespeople, either.

Also, understand which colors suit your complexion, too. As much as you might love a particular shade or two that you see dresses made in, this doesn’t mean the hues will go well with your skin tone. List two or three colors that bring out your features best and focus on them as you shop.

Think About the Vibe You Want to Create

Another tip is to determine the type of vibe you want to create with your look. For example, do you want to feel like a princess on the day, boast more of a rocker or indie vibe, or stick with something sleek, simple, and understated? What’s your personality, and what’s the tone you’re looking to achieve? There are numerous styles to choose from, and you’ll probably need to check out different store types to find the most appropriate selections for your needs.

Focus on Fit

Also, focus on fit when trying on dresses. Some alterations are cost-effective and straightforward to make, but if a dress will require so much tailoring that the cost ends up prohibitive or will take too long or isn’t achievable anyway, the product isn’t for you. Don’t settle for a gown you love but that doesn’t fit your body correctly just because there’s only a specific size in stock. Keep looking until you find something that will flatter you properly.

Get Input from Trusted Friends and Family

Another top tip is to take some trusted friends or family members with you when you’re checking out prom dresses. Be sure they’ll be honest with you rather than just telling you what you want to hear. They need to know the look you’re going for and the budget you have in mind, too. Having a second set of eyes and getting opinions from people who care about you can make the whole process more fun and effective.

Wear Helpful Underwear and Shoes When Shopping

Lastly, it makes a big difference if you wear helpful underwear and shapewear when trying on dresses in stores. What you have on underneath clothing can change how it looks and give you a better idea of the fit and final look you can achieve.

Take shoes with you to fittings that you’d likely want to wear to the prom or are a similar heel height, too, to what you’d buy for the occasion. This helps give more insight into how an outfit will look when everything is pulled together.

Going to prom is one of the most exciting aspects of the school year, so it requires getting just the right outfit for the event. Follow the tips above to help you find the perfect plus-size prom dress in the coming months.
