Scalp Care is Hair Care: How to Improve the Health of Your Scalp

We all want luscious, healthy hair, right? Well, here’s a secret: it all starts with your scalp. And that’s exactly the part of hair care that we often tend to overlook. But if your scalp isn’t happy, your hair won’t be either. So, let’s learn a bit more about scalp care, and how it can help you get the long and fabulous hair of your dreams.

The Scalp and Its Importance

Your scalp is like the soil for your hair’s garden. It’s where your hair follicles reside, and it plays a pivotal role in hair growth and health. So, if you’re dreaming of Rapunzel-like locks, it’s time to give your scalp some love. However, there isn’t a lot of focus on scalp hair when it comes to conventional hair products. Most of the shampoos and conditioners out there are specifically formulated to nourish your hair length and ends, completely neglecting your scalp. So if you want to learn how to properly care for your scalp, here are some things to take into consideration.

The Basics of Scalp Care

First things first – scalp care basics. Just like your face, your scalp needs cleansing and exfoliation. Use a mild shampoo and gently massage it into your scalp to get rid of dirt, oil, and those pesky dead skin cells. Rinse thoroughly, and you’re off to a good start! If you’re feeling like your fingers alone won’t do the trick, you can also use a scalp brush. There are numerous variations available on the market, however, you have to make sure that the brush has flexible bristles. After all, you don’t want to hurt yourself while you’re massaging your scalp with it. This is also a great way of physical exfoliation. Of course, there are also chemical scalp exfoliants. Most of them include ingredients such as Glycolic acid or Salicylic acid. Glycolic acid can be a great option for people with dry scalps, and Salicylic acid for people with oily scalps.

Avoid Overwashing

While cleaning your scalp is important, overwashing can strip it of its natural oils. And that will only leave your hair dry and brittle. You don’t want that, right? That’s why I would strongly suggest to not wash your hair every day. I know that it can be tricky for some people, especially if you workout a lot. So if you can help it, wash your hair only 2-3 times a week, depending on your hair type and lifestyle. You can always use a bit of dry shampoo in between washes.

Scalp Massages

Who doesn’t love a good scalp massager? Not only does it feel fantastic, but it also stimulates blood flow to your hair follicles, promoting healthy hair growth. It’s like a mini spa day for your scalp. Ideally, you should never do a “dry” scalp massage. Invest in a good scalp oil that you can apply to your scalp a few hours before washing. A rosemary-based oil will not only increase circulation but also improve your hair growth. You can either buy premade scalp oils or mix a few drops of rosemary essential oil with a carrier oil, such as coconut or jojoba oil.
