Humid Weather and Hot Temperatures: Why Your Skincare Routine Should Change With the Weather

It’s official — we have reached that point of summer when it’s so hot we don’t want to wear makeup, our hair is tied up 24/7, and all we want is a cold cocktail and endless amounts of sunscreen. And it’s not just the high temperatures that are driving us crazy. The humidity is what’s makes it unbearable. If you’ve taken a closer look at your skin these days, you will also notice that your complexion might not be looking like it usually does either. And the reason why is pretty straightforward — high heat and humidity change the way in which our skin reacts to our usual skincare routine. Here’s how and why your skincare routine should change with the weather.

How does humidity impact our skin?

Before we start talking about skincare tips and tricks, let’s first find out how exactly humidity affects our skin’s behavior and overall appearance. Have you ever noticed how in humid places your skin feels sticky and oily? That’s because this weather conditions increase your sweat production, causing clogged pores and the occasional breakout. On the other hand, during the winter, when the humidity levels are generally low, our skin becomes more dry, dehydrated, or even flaky and dull. Humidity is basically just the amount of water in the air, so it’s no surprise that our skin will feel a lot less hydrated when humidity levels are low.

How you can change your skincare routine

Now that we know how our skin responds to high levels of humidity, let’s see how you can alter your skincare routine during these weather conditions. The general rules are always the same — cleansing, moisturizing, and sunscreen during the day. However, because your skin is probably oilier than usual, you will have to take a different approach to these things.

Basic care

If you’re a skincare minimalist, you’ll absolutely love this part of the article. The number one tip that I can give you for switching up your skincare routine for humid weather is — keep things simple and light. There is no need for three different serums and excessive skincare steps. A thick layer of product will only further clog your pores causing imperfections. Instead of that, opt for light-weight gel moisturizers. And if you’re in need of extra hydration, even a basic hyaluronic acid serum will do the trick.

When it comes to cleansing, I would highly suggest to opt for a gentle foam cleansers. While I usually prefer a cream cleanser that leaves my face feeling moisturized, during the summer heat I just will like a foaming cleanser does a better job. If you’re prone to breakouts and oiliness around your T-zone, you can incorporate something with Salicylic acid or green tea extract. Foaming cleansers usually break down oil more effectively, and can also help keep your sebum levels down.

Additional steps

If a basic routine isn’t doing the trick, it’s time to introduce a few extra steps. Because you might be experiencing some acne or imperfections, consider adding an exfoliating product into your routine. Regular exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and unclogs pores, preventing breakouts. Choose a vegan exfoliator with gentle granules or fruit enzymes. Aim to exfoliate two to three times a week, depending on your skin’s sensitivity. But you have to make sure to always apply sunscreen afterwards.
