Should You Be Using Purple Shampoo?

If you’re a bottle blonde, the odds are that you’re very familiar with purple shampoos. Whenever deciding to switch up your hair color for something lighter, you’ll hear a million lectures about maintenance. Your hairstylist (along with every girlfriend) will keep warning you about the upkeep, especially when going blonde. Blondes do have more fun, it’s true. But they also have to do a lot to keep the fun ball rolling. Blonde upkeep involves a very tight relationship with your hair stylist and a lot of TLC in the shower. One of the most important components you can incorporate in your shower time is going to be a purple shampoo. Should you start using purple shampoo if you’ve dyed your hair blonde? Absolutely, and here’s why…

What is it?

Purple shampoos work pretty interestingly, actually. As the name would suggest, they are shampoos that are either purple or violet in color. How do they work? These shampoos are infused with purple/violet pigments. When going blonde, it’s a very fine line between vibrant and brassy. This is true of blonde as well as ombre/balyage hair which are super in trend right now!

How Does it Work?

Think about a color wheel. We’ve all seen one back in school. We’ve been taught how opposing colors can cancel each other out. Well, think back to the wheel (or google it, honestly we had to too!) and notice that purple is on the opposite side of yellow. That’s really what it comes down to- purple pigments cancel out intense yellowness that can leave your lighter hair looking brassy or harshly fake. Think of purple shampoos as a toner. They keep the balance of your hair color in check!

Why Should You Use One?

If we haven’t convinced you yet, let’s hammer it into your brain one last time… Dyeing your hair isn’t cheap, right? It isn’t the simplest of processes. Naturally, you’re going to want to get the most out of it in terms of longevity and keeping it looking fresh for longer. Purple shampoos extend the life of your hair color by a ton. They keep it in check to save you money in the long run.

A purple shampoo isn’t a miracle worker, don’t get us wrong. But what a purple shampoo can do is save you a few extra trips to the hair salon. The trick is to invest in a good one. There are tons of purple shampoos in the market, but investing in a higher quality one is going to save you a lot more money than you’d think. Imagine watching your hair color look fresher every time you step out of the shower? We don’t know about you, but that has us sold!
