Did You Know That the Average Woman Only Wears 20% of Her Clothes? Don’t Be Her and Make Your Closet Work Overtime

I’ve recently read somewhere that the average person only wears about 20% of their closet. If that’s not scary enough, then brace yourself for another fact — the average clothing item is only worn seven times before it’s being tossed out. And let me tell you, it’s got me thinking —What can we do to make our closets work overtime? So, here’s what I’ve come up with.

Closet Declutter

This might sound a bit contra-productive, but the first step in making your closet work overtime is giving it a good declutter. Take a good, hard look at everything in your closet and ask yourself, “Have I worn this in the past year?” If the answer is no, it might be time to let it go. Be ruthless – there’s no point in holding onto clothes that no longer serve you. It’s a way to go over everything you own and learn more about what styles you enjoy wearing, versus the ones you don’t.

Also, let this be your gentle reminder to be eco-conscious while you’re at it. Instead of tossing your unwanted clothes in the trash, consider selling them online, donating them to charity, gifting them to loved ones, or reusing them as cleaning rags. Not only will you clear out your closet, but you’ll also give your clothes a second chance at life.

Wearing Your Pieces Year Round

Who says you can only wear certain pieces during specific seasons? With a little creativity, you can make your closet work overtime all year round. Take your favorite slip midi skirt, for example. It’s one of my favorite pieces to style, no matter the temperatures outside. Of course, I’ll style it differently depending on the season. If it’s the dead of winter, I’ll add a pair of fleece tights, a chunky sweater, boots, and a faux fur coat to the mix. But if I’m wearing it during summer, I’ll keep things light and breezy with a pair of heeled sandals and a button-down blouse.

And let’s not forget about activewear. Sure, it’s great for working out, but it can also double as casual wear or even loungewear. Throw on a hoodie and sneakers, and you’re ready to run errands or meet up with friends for coffee. Activewear is all about comfort and versatility, so don’t be afraid to get creative with how you style it.

Prioritizing Quality Over Quantity

Last but not least, I want to give you one crucial tip when it comes to your future fashion hauls — always prioritize quality over quantity. I know how tempting it is to fill your closet with cheap, trendy pieces. But investing in high-quality, timeless items is a game-changer. Not only do well-made clothes look better and last longer, but they also tend to have a lower cost per wear in the long run.

Think about it – would you rather spend $50 on a flimsy shirt that falls apart after a few washes, or $100 on a well-constructed blouse that you’ll wear for years? Sure, the initial cost might be higher, but when you consider how many times you’ll wear it, the cost per wear is actually lower. This is a lot less wasteful, and your overall look will appear a lot more elevated too.
