Breakouts and Periods: How are the Two Connected?

We’ve all been there – your skin is clear, radiant, basically glowing. And only a few days after that, that time of the month starts, and so do the breakouts. It’s just so annoying! However, how are the two related? If that’s something you’ve been wondering too, grab your favorite comfort food, and let’s dive into the fascinating world of hormones, skin, and how they’re all intertwined.

The Hormone Rollercoaster

No one likes to hear it, but our bodies are like hormonal rollercoasters during our menstrual cycle. At the start, estrogen takes the wheel, giving our skin that healthy glow from within. You feel feminine, pretty, and on top of the world. But sadly, that won’t last for too long. Once our period approaches, testosterone gets in the driver’s seat. Yep, that’s right – we ladies have testosterone too, just in smaller amounts. But don’t get it confused. Testosterone is not the villain here, it’s just doing its thing. However, sometimes that “thing” can manifest in a few annoying breakouts. Testosterone is part of a group of hormones called androgens. When androgen levels rise, they send signals to our skin to produce more oil. That extra oil can clog our pores, creating the perfect breeding ground for breakouts. So if you’re noticing that your skin is oilier than usual during your period, then you’re not wrong.

Inflammation and Stress

As if the extra oil wasn’t enough, our menstrual cycle also tends to make our skin more sensitive. So, when you touch your face or use harsh skincare products, it’s more likely to get inflamed, leading to those red, angry pimples that we’d rather do without. In addition to that, the extra amount of stress can also wreak havoc on our skin. When we’re stressed, our bodies produce more cortisol, a hormone that can stimulate even more oil production. So, if you’re dealing with breakouts during your period, take it as an opportunity to practice some self-care. Relax as much as you can, don’t put too much strain on your body, and give your body and mind the chance to rest. Your skin will thank you.

Food Cravings

Admit it, we all crave some not-so-healthy treats around our period. But guess what? Sugary and greasy foods can spike our blood sugar levels and trigger even more oil production. So, while that chocolate might be calling your name, opt for a piece of dark chocolate instead. Instead of greasy and sodium-filled snacks, opt for something more healthy. I know—that’s something no menstruating person wants to hear during that time of the month. However, if you eat crap, you will feel like crap too.

Your Skin’s Monthly Cycle

Just like your period, your skin has its own monthly cycle too. It takes about 28 days for new skin cells to make their way to the surface. So, when your period is approaching, your skin might be shedding those old cells faster than usual. This can mix with the excess oil, creating more clogs, and therefore—more breakouts. But don’t worry! The good news in all this is that these things won’t last forever. Once your hormone rollercoaster ride is over, your skin often returns to its pre-period glow. So, don’t stress too much about the occasional zit – it’s just a reminder that your body is doing its thing, and soon enough, it’ll settle down.
