Worried About You or Your Spouse Losing a Wedding Ring?

No matter how many years you’ve been married, it’s completely normal to be afraid of either losing your wedding ring yourself or finding out that your spouse has lost theirs. It doesn’t help that it’s commonly used as a plot in movies and TV shows, either.

We all remember the classic sitcom episodes where a husband or wife drops their wedding ring down the drain or it gets lost during a drunken night out with their friends. We laughed as the characters struggled to retrace their steps and find the ring before their spouse found out.

In the real world, of course, it’s a lot easier to tell the person you married that something happened to the ring, you’re sorry, and it’s not a reflection of your love for them, which grows stronger by the day.

What else can you do to make it up to them? Well, how you choose to do so is between the two of you. On the financial side, though, you may have a few options, especially if you’ve planned ahead. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Spare Ring

Everyone makes mistakes, accidents happen, and even the most conscientious person can misplace something valuable like a wedding ring. If your spouse comes to you and tells you they can’t find theirs or they know they’ve lost it, please don’t assume it’s a reflection of their opinion on your marriage!

If you know you or your spouse are clumsy and one of you is afraid of losing it (or of the other person losing theirs!) a great idea is to have two rings each. One can be a simple gold band or inexpensive cubic zirconia that you wear to work or outdoors and the other, more expensive one is the real one, which you save for special occasions.

Wedding Ring Tattoos

Similarly, instead of having a “dummy” ring to wear out in public, a wedding ring tattoo can make a great substitute. This is also an excellent solution for anyone who works with electricity or otherwise might not want to wear metal at work.

An elegantly designed ring tattoo can also be tailored to your unique relationship by putting both of your initials in it or any other message that might be engraved on a real ring. It’s also the perfect representation of your love for one another, in that both will survive for the rest of your lives.

Wedding Ring Insurance

Insurance for a wedding ring? 20 years ago, most insurance companies would probably laugh you out of the building for suggesting it. In 2023, however, more and more insurance companies have begun to offer it to their customers.

If you have a special set of matching wedding rings, a $10,000 diamond ring, or even one that is more emotionally than financially valuable, getting wedding ring insurance can definitely be a good idea.

Companies like State Farm, Progressive, and other major providers have begun to offer this service in addition to their standard coverage for vehicles or homes. These policies often cost about $100 a year, maybe a bit more depending on the value of the ring in question.

Check Your Ring Finger Constantly

Another solution, albeit a bit more practical than elegant, is to set a reminder on your watch or phone to check your finger for your ring or, if you had to remove it for work or another reason, the pocket you put it in. It should always be a zippered pocket if possible, as this will prevent it from falling out unnoticed.

If you work at a desk or are otherwise able to look at your phone during the day, you can even set a silent reminder every hour on the hour to look down and make sure it’s still with you. Some may regard this as paranoid but it’s a valid strategy for not just wedding rings but anything else you want to keep track of.

The important thing is making sure that you don’t lose your wedding ring in a way that works for you. If your coworker thinks it’s weird, who cares? You are, of course, free to laugh at them when they end up misplacing their own wedding ring after they mocked you for your phone alarm system. Plus, we all know that Sally in Accounts Receivable does way weirder stuff than this.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve recently been married (congratulations!) or you’ve been married for a long time (congratulations!), it’s normal to be worried about either you or your spouse losing your wedding ring. It’s an important symbol of your union for you two to show the world.

However, by planning ahead, you can make sure that you’ll be able to get another ring to replace one that’s lost or you can take steps to make sure it never goes missing in the first place. Either way, here’s to many more years of marital bliss between you and your beloved!
