Working Out in the Summer Heat: Tips to Stay Motivated, Hydrated, and Healthy

There is no better way to get active and enjoy the outdoors than during the summer. However, exercising in the heat also comes with a number of challenges. First of all, it’s a lot harder to actually feel the will to go out and be active when the temperatures are hot. And secondly, we also have to take our health and well-being into account. So if you’re looking for tips for working out in the summer heat, here are some of our favorite ones.

Timing is Key

Timing is one of the most important factors when it comes to working out in the summer. Avoid exercising during the hottest times of the day, usually between 10 AM and 4 PM Instead, try to plan your workouts in the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler. This will not only help you avoid heat exhaustion and dehydration but also make your workouts more comfortable and enjoyable. This is especially important if you’re someone who exclusively workouts outdoors.

Wear Light Clothing

When exercising in the heat, it’s essential to wear clothing that is light and breathable. Choose lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics that will help keep you cool and dry. Avoid dark colors, as they absorb more heat and can make you feel even hotter. Consider investing in workout clothes specifically designed for hot weather, like running shorts with built-in ventilation or tank tops made of breathable materials.

Take Your Workouts Indoors

I know that working out outdoors is a lot more enjoyable. However, if the heat is too intense and the humidity is pretty much unbearable, the most reasonable thing to do would be to take your workouts indoors. You have two options: either sign up for a gym membership or work out in your own home. Gyms and fitness studios offer you a lot more versatility and are also air-conditioned. However, if you decide to work out from home, you have the added benefit of privacy, and customizing your workouts to fit your goals and lifestyle. Obviously, it’s also a lot cheaper. In addition, keeping your home cool with some extreme heating tips might be a better alternative since it also improves the value of your home. So, why not work out from home as long as you have made some adjustments to make it conducive for you?

Choose the Right Liquids

Staying hydrated is crucial when exercising in the heat. Drinking water before, during, and after your workout is essential to replace the fluids lost through sweat. However, plain water may not be enough to replenish the electrolytes lost during longer workout sessions. Consider drinking specially formulated sports drinks or coconut water, which is a natural source of electrolytes. Avoid sugary drinks or caffeine, which can dehydrate you even further.

Know When to Stop

Last but not least – you have to know when to stop. Listening to your body while exercising is important, but it’s especially important if you’re doing it in the hottest months of the year. If you notice any changes in your body, such as dizziness, cramps, or even nausea – stop the workout, and seek out help. Go to a cool place, drink some water, and let someone know where you are and how you’re feeling. It’s a lot more difficult for our bodies to endure a workout in high temperatures than it would be when it’s below 80 degrees F.
