What to Avoid When Wearing A Suit To Work

Professionalism is the key to making great connections, building a client base, and succeeding in your every day life. Part of that professionalism comes from dressing sharp. And there’s no better way to do that than with a nice suit. Now, some might proclaim the age of the power suit to be over, but that’s simply not the case. A good, well-pressed, and well-worn suit can make even the most novice of professionals stand out at work. Unfortunately, putting together and wearing your suit right can be a challenge. In this article, we’ll help you look great with our guide to wearing a suit the right way in your professional environment. Check it out below.

Wearing the Wrong Size Suit is a Common Mistake

If you’re going to wear a suit to work or any other occasion, you need to ensure it fits properly. Nobody wants to look uncomfortable in oversized (or undersized), itchy clothes. So how do you make a suit look good? You make sure it’s the right size! The pants should be form fitting, you should be able to hold them up without a belt (if you do wear a belt, it should be decorative), there shouldn’t be any bunching of material, and your suit should follow the lines of your body accordingly. A suit jacket should fit over the shoulders, the collar should lie flat, and your jacket should not be ill fitting. Make sure you size your suit properly using online guides or even seeing a tailor to get the most out of wearing an elegant suit

Not Wearing The Jacket Right Can Look Sloppy

When you’re sizing your suit, a good fit is obviously quite important. But you also need to make sure your jacket fits! Not wearing your jacket properly or well is a common faux pas that can make you the laughingstock of the office. It’s sloppy. It doesn’t look good. It makes the rest of the suit look dull in comparison. When you try on the jacket, make sure it fits your arms properly. It shouldn’t be too tight, extend past your wrists, or have a poor fit when buttoned. Make sure you keep your buttons fastened and that the fabric doesn’t pull when you move. By taking the time to ensure proper fit for your suit jacket, you can make a much better impression and avoid a sloppy appearance while at work or on the town.

Not Wearing An Undershirt is a Bad Idea

Wearing a suit is only half the equation. You should also wear an undershirt. Undershirts can help provide a barrier between the dress shirt fabric and your skin. This can be quite helpful if you sweat a lot. It can also help keep an extra layer to ensure a proper fit for your dress shirt. It shouldn’t be too big or too small. If it’s too big, the collar will look strange and the sleeves might be too long (and show through your dress shirt). It also just looks sloppy. An undershirt should be white (or at least light-colored) so that it doesn’t show through or clash with your dress shirts. Make sure it’s always clean and fresh, too. Finally, always make sure that your undershirt fits well enough not to ride up or pull out of your pants when you sit down. No one wants to see your lower back or undergarments.

Not Wearing a Watch is a Rookie Mistake

Wearing a watch is an extension of your personality, so it should also be worn to complement your outfit. Men’s luxury watches are ideal for maintaining a professional appearance. Not only are they elegant and go with just about any style, they’re functional. A nice watch is going to give you the time, make you seem like you’re responsible, and help you keep track of things. Better yet, it avoids the distraction of smartphones and other devices. A watch says a lot about you in a professional setting as well. In fact, all the clothes you wear say something about who you are, what you want to be, and your reputation. By adding a luxury or designer watching to the mix, you’re showing others that you’re strong and able to keep up with the best while also showcasing an immaculate sense of style.

Poor Accessorizing Can Be Devastating To Your Look

When you’re trying to make a good impression, you don’t want to be too casual, but you do want to accessorize. Ties are the ultimate accessory. A dark or plain tie works well with most suits. Cufflinks are an awesome accessory that can make your outfit pop. They stand out and look elegant, but are really quite simple. They’re not flashy, either, so they won’t distract from the suit itself. A tie bar can be a good substitue for cuff links or even an accessory. Pocket squares–those fancy folded handkerchiefs people wear in the jacket or breast pocket–are also a nice elegant accessory for any occasion.
