Let’s be real: who has time these days for a full-on, multi-step makeup routine? I mean, I love a good glam moment as much as the next girl, but most mornings, I barely have time to finish my coffee, let alone contour my face. That’s why I’m so into this whole minimalist makeup trend—it’s easy, it’s fresh, and it doesn’t take a million products to pull off. This not only saves me a lot of time, but money as well. And in 2025, that’s something I can’t be mad at.
However, one thing that you have to understand is that minimalist makeup isn’t about skipping makeup altogether (although props to you if you have that type of confidence). It’s about keeping things simple, using fewer products, and still looking like your best self. And honestly? It just feels good. Like, who doesn’t want to spend less time in front of a mirror and more time living their life? However, nailing the perfect minimalist makeup routine can be a bit tricky. So, today I decided to share some of my biggest tips.
Why Everyone’s Into Minimalist Makeup
Before we get started with the actual routine, let me first share a bit more insight into what minimalist makeup actually is. So, what’s the deal? Why is everyone suddenly on the less-is-more train? The “clean girl” makeup look has completely taken over social media, and “underconsumption” is a viral topic all over the internet. What could be the reason? Here’s my take:
Life is hectic, and we’re over it
There’s just so much going on—work, friends, family, doomscrolling on social media (kidding… kinda). Nobody wants to spend an hour blending eyeshadow anymore. Minimalist makeup is like, “Hey, let’s get you looking cute in 10 minutes or less.” I don’t know if this is just a me thing, but back in the day, I used to do my makeup just for fun. But nowadays that just seems like such a waste of time. Maybe it’s just adulting?
Skincare is the new black
I feel like the past few years, everyone’s become obsessed with skincare. And it makes sense, right? If your skin is glowing and healthy, you don’t really need a ton of makeup. Just a little concealer here and there, and boom—you’re good to go. So, it comes as no surprise that people decide to spend most of their monthly beauty budget on skincare, and not on makeup. Honestly, in my opinion, that’s definitely the better option. While I do love makeup, I see spending extra money on high-quality skincare as an investment in the future.
We care about the planet (and our wallets)
Raise your hand if you’ve ever bought a palette for one shade, only to have it sit in your drawer for two years. Same. Minimalist makeup means buying (and wasting) less, which is good for the environment and your budget. I know it’s not sexy to talk about money and finances, but the truth is that most of us nowadays prefer to save our money, instead of spending it on Sephora hauls every month.
The “natural beauty” look is in
I’ve already mentioned the “clean girl” trend. And even though it has been a few years since this look was trending on TikTok, I believe that this overall aesthetic is here to stay for the long run, especially amongst the younger generation. And honestly, I love that we’re moving away from trying to look airbrushed all the time. Minimalist makeup is all about working with what you’ve got. Freckles? Let ’em shine. A little redness? No big deal. It’s like telling the world, “This is me, take it or leave it.”
What Minimalist Makeup Looks Like
Now, let’s get to the point – how do you actually do minimalist makeup? It’s pretty straightforward: you focus on a few key products that enhance what’s already there. Here’s what I mean by that:
Skin that looks like skin: Not caked-up or overly matte—just fresh and dewy. Full coverage is a thing of the past, instead, we’re focusing on skin tints and tinted sunscreens.
Soft, natural brows: Nothing too overdrawn or blocky. There’s no need to give yourself the “Sephora eyebrow”, or crave out your eyebrows with concealer. Just keep them as close to your natural brows as possible, and brush them out with a clear brow gel.
A hint of color: Minimalist makeup doesn’t have to be boring! You can still incorporate a hint of color into your look. Think flushed cheeks and a lip tint, like you’ve just been outside for a bit.
Simple eyes: As much as I love eyeshadow, smokey eyes, and cut creases are a thing of the past. Especially when it comes to daytime looks. Instead, the trend is to just use mascara (preferably brown mascara, for a more natural look) and a swipe of bronzer to your crease. If you really want to go all out, a sparkly eyeshadow all over the lid (like Space Cowboy by UD) will do the trick.
How to Create a Minimalist Makeup Routine
Okay, it’s time to talk a bit more about the actual routine. I’ll share some of my product recommendations as well, but honestly – just use what you already know works for your. The idea here is that you don’t need a million products, and you definitely don’t need to be a pro.
Start with a good base
As I have already mentioned, it’s time to forget the heavy foundation. Go for something lightweight, like a tinted moisturizer or BB cream. If you’ve got a few spots or dark circles, dab on some concealer. The goal is to even things out, not cover everything up. I personally love products with a natural, not too overly dewy finish. My holy grails are the Maybelline Skin Tint (it’s seriously SO good and gives a surprising amount of coverage) and the Nars Light Reflecting Foundation (a bit pricey, but my skin looks like silk every time I use it).
Next up, I always have to use a powder. Huda Beauty Easy Bake is the GOAT, however, I also love my Maybelline Fit Me powder. I apply a very light amount with a powder puff and clean off the excess with a fluffy brush.
Add a little flush
I feel naked without blush! So, no matter how much I simplify my routine, I’ll always stick to wearing blush. Cream blush is your BFF here. It’s super easy to blend, and you can use it on your cheeks and your lips. Just tap it in with your fingers—it’s almost foolproof.
While I’m still working on finishing my Rare Beauty liquid blushes in Happy and Hope (they are so pigmented that they last for a decade) I’m super tempted by the new Rhode blushes as well. They seem like the perfect addition to a minimalist makeup look. This comes as no surprise considering that Hailey Bieber is the OG clean girl.
Keep your eyes simple
I know that it will be hard for my fellow millennials to hear this, but if you don’t want your makeup to look dated, then it’s time to skip the black-winged liner and smoky shadows (unless you’re really feeling it). I used to wake up at 5 AM in high school just so I could put on eyeshadow and liner. These kids nowadays really have it easy, don’t they?
Simply curl your lashes and add a coat of mascara. I really do prefer brown mascara currently, and Essence has some great ones for a very affordable price. This is ideal considering that you should replace your mascaras every three months. If you want, you can swipe a bit of bronzer or blush on your lids for some subtle color.
Define those brows
Minimalist brows are more about shape than drama. Use a tinted brow gel to brush them into place or fill in sparse spots with a pencil or pen. If you ask me, there’s absolutely no need to splurge on brow products. Once again, I use Maybelline products here. But even more affordable drugstore brands like Essence and Elf have some amazing options. The only important thing here is to find a color that works with your features.
Finish with your lips
I don’t leave the house without lip liner! The key here is to choose a color that’s just slightly darker than your natural lip color. I truly have so many recommendations here. However, once again I believe that this is a category where you don’t have to spend a lot of money at all.
Essence and Catrice have some amazing and long-lasting lip liners that are BULLETPROOF. My favorite colors for the Essence one are “The Perfect Shade” (it really is the perfect shade) and “Because It’s Iconic”. For the Catrice liner, I love “Queen Vibes” and “Starring Role”. Try them out and thank me later.
Why Minimalist Makeup Just Hits Different
There’s something super freeing about not relying on a 12-step routine to feel good about yourself. Minimalist makeup is less about covering up and more about enhancing what you’ve already got. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it just feels… lighter, you know?
Plus, it’s practical. Your makeup bag gets smaller, your wallet gets happier, and your mornings get way less stressful. And let’s be honest—there’s something kind of badass about showing up with just a swipe of mascara and still feeling like a queen.
Minimalist makeup isn’t just a trend—it’s a whole mood. It’s about doing less, looking great, and feeling even better. So, if you’re tired of complicated routines and overstuffed makeup drawers, give it a shot. You might just find that less really is more.
