Skincare for Your 20s, 30s, 40s, and Beyond: Why Age Does Matter

You’ve probably already noticed that your skincare needs change over time. Your current routine is different from the routine you had in your teen and young adult years. Just like we age, our skin will age too. And different times call for different needs. That’s why it’s so important to listen to your skin and change the products you use from time to time. So if you want to learn more about skincare for your 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond – keep reading.

20s: Prevention is key

Let’s start with your most stressful decade – your 20s. While this is the time of new beginnings, huge life decisions, and a tremendous amount of your stress – your skin is still at its best. You left your angry-teenager-skin era, and you’re still too young and have too much collagen in your body to notice deep wrinkles. But that can quickly change if you decide to neglect your skin – going to bed without washing off your makeup, never using sunscreen, and doing nothing to protect your skin from damage and aging. That’s why it’s so important to establish some good habits. The most important ones include:

  1. Sunscreen: The number one contributor to premature aging is sun damage. That’s why you have to absolutely make sure you’re wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day. Make sure you pick a sunscreen that you actually enjoy wearing, and that looks good under your everyday makeup.
  2. Create a basic routine: No matter how tired, tipsy, or overworked you are, there are two skincare steps that you have to do every night: cleansing and moisturizing! You have to cleanse your skin from the dirt, sebum, sunscreen, and makeup that accumulates on your face during the day.

30s: Take your skincare more seriously

Your 30s will be your decade of personal growth. But it will also be the decade when you may start to notice the first signs of aging. This is because your body’s production of collagen and elastin – the proteins that give your skin its structure and elasticity – begins to slow down. But that doesn’t have to be anything negative. Remember that aging is a privilege. All you have to do is up your skincare game, and give your skin that extra boost of TLC that it deserves. You can do that by incorporating some of these steps:

  1. Use products with anti-aging benefits: Many different products fall under this category. Look for ingredients such as retinol, peptides, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, beta-glucan, bakuchiol, glycolic acid, or Q10.
  2. Consider skincare treatments: Sometimes skincare alone won’t do the trick. But luckily, there are numerous skincare treatments that you can try out. These include lasers, facials, peelings, but also fillers, and botox.

40s and beyond: Age gracefully

For most women, the aging process starts to show more clearly as they enter their 40s and beyond. Deeper wrinkles, age spots, and a lack of skin elasticity could become a bit more obvious. But that doesn’t mean that skin that is aging can’t look radiant and beautiful. Especially if you took good care of it in the previous decades. Once again, be on the lookout for products with anti-aging benefits. You can also consider visiting a dermatologist to get access to a prescription-strength vitamin A derivative. In addition to that, make sure to stick to all the other good skin habits that you have implemented over the years.
