A new vegan food truck featuring a delicious plant-based menu has arrived on the scene in the San Antonio area.
Go Vegan was conceptualized by husband and wife team, Akeem Best and Tara Best, who are on a mission to prove that vegan fare can be both delicious and affordable.Æone mouth-watering dish at a time.
It all began in late 2017 when the couple watched the hard-hitting documentary, “What the Health.” Before the show even ended, they’d made up their minds that they were going to begin following a plant-based lifestyle.
Their journey towards veganism began that night when they opted for peanut butter and jelly sliders instead of their usual meal. Since then they’ve been on the path to a more sustainable way of life, along with their five children.
The couple then began the process of coming up with innovative menu options and working towards their dream of a vegan food truck. Through Go Vegan, they hope to break the mindset that vegan food is expensive and flavorless by serving up delicious Panamanian cuisine inspired fare. Some of the dishes on offer are black beans and rice, tostones (fried plantains), tofu tacos, mac and cheese, along with a wide selection of smoothies and sandwiches.
The Bests’ are not newbies to the food industry. Together they have over ten years of experience working in various restaurants including Joe’s Crab Shack, IHOP, and Jim’s Restaurants. They worked a number of jobs before launching their smoothie business. The couple got started by selling their smoothies at local pop-up markets and events.
Go Vegan then expanded to the vegan market hosted monthly at Brick at Blue Star. Hip Peaz Vegan Eats and Tapatio Vegan Tacos are other business that came out of this popular vegan marketplace. In addition to proving that vegan food can be tasty, convenient, and affordable, the team behind Go Vegan want to address the conversion market. Their goal is not just to cater to vegans, but to also show non-vegans that plant-based food can be delicious.
The truck had its grand opening at the Blanco Farmer’s Market and then moved to the Rose Bush Food Truck Park on July 14. In addition to the regular dishes on the menu, they also plan on offering seasonal food and drinks.
According to Akeem Best, they will continue preparing and selling food at the sites of their grand-opening week if business is good. Eventually, they hope to launch a brick-and-mortar restaurant offering delicious vegan fare.
