Plastic Surgery Guide for spring

Spring is a time when many women who have done all they can with diet and exercise turn to plastic surgery to fine tune their feminine shape in preparation for summer swimsuit season. Spring is one of the busiest times in my practice! The most common plastic surgery procedures in the spring are liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and also labiaplasty (vaginal cosmetic surgery).

LABIAPLASTY

Although this surgery is not talked about much, labiaplasty which reshapes and trims the labia minora is more common than most women think.
I perform several of these surgeries a week on patients of all ages.

Why do women get this surgery?

Often times, excess labia minora can be seen in tight clothing or bathing suits.
I have performed this surgery on many swimsuit models whose labia makes them self-conscious because it creates a bulge visible in photographs.
For others, it causes irritation and discomfort from rubbing on jeans or leggings during exercise and other activities.
Many women were born with asymmetric labia and others developed it after having children.

Is this surgery painful?

Although discomfort varies from person to person, the majority of my patients are surprised at how quickly they recover and report that the surgery was less painful than they expected.
The labia edge is not particularly sensitive for most women and by careful handling of the tissues during surgery, most women heal quickly.

How long before patients can have sex after this surgery?

In general I tell patients not to have sexual intercourse for a month after surgery.
They are also advised not to use tampons, wear tight clothing that rubs, and to keep the incision site lubricated with antibiotic ointment for a month as well.

I always tell my patients that living a healthy lifestyle comes first and that no surgery is a replacement for diet and exercise.
However, there are some things that only surgery can fix. Most of these surgeries take a few months to completely heal so plan accordingly and make sure you give yourself enough time to heal.
It is always so rewarding getting photos and letters from my patients every summer who tell me they are in a bikini for the first time in years!
