One of my mentors recently told me about a conversation he had with Donald Trump years ago when he was going through bankruptcy. He asked the Don how he got into that situation and how he pulled himself out. One word he said.”Momentum”.
And that’s what this short article is about.
Momentum can’t be seen or heard but you can feel it and you know when you have it As stated in Isaac Newton’s 1st law, objects at rest tend to stay at rest unless acted on from an outside force; objects in motion tend to stay in motion unless something stops their momentum.
Love him or hate him, Trump has momentum and there are some lessons we can all benefit from in watching his snowball get bigger and bigger. It is like taking off on a bicycle: the initial cranks of those pedals may feel hard initially, but as you get moving momentum takes over and it actually gets easier.
I often tell my clients who want to get back in shape that they shouldn’t follow the routines of those already in peak fitness. Getting in shape is a lot different that maintaining shape. Often it’s the first step that stops us because we know it will be difficult. There is just no way around that it will be hard to get to the gym that first time, stopping the negative momentum of sitting on the couch.
Just like it is hard to get back in the dating game after a long relationship. It can be challenging to have the courage to get back on the phone after a deal has gone bad.
This is why we must focus our minds on the end result . what it will feel like on the other side. We need to make that big push in another direction and have faith that momentum will take over.
Momentum will work for you or against you. Either way, it will work in the direction you are going. As Will Rogers said, “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”
So with that, look at the areas of your life that could use a firm kick into gear. Get moving and know that momentum will be there to help you out!
