How Long Does It Take to Get Over a Breakup?

If you’ve recently been through a breakup, you may be wondering when you’ll start to feel like yourself again. There is a good chance that you’ll go through a lot of physical and mental changes after an intimate relationship ends, from a lack of appetite to difficulty sleeping.

You’ve probably heard this too often to keep track of, but time does indeed heal all wounds. However, if you’re in the middle of the heartbreak and turmoil that comes with a breakup, this can feel like a long wait. So, it’s only natural to want to know how long it is likely to take you to get over your breakup. Many people believe that there’s a mythical formula when it comes to the length of the time it takes to heal. Some say that it’s half as long as the relationship period, while others think that it’s a few months.

So how long DOES it take to get over a breakup? Unfortunately, there isn’t a magic right answer to this question. It varies from person to person, and most situations are unique.  These are numerous circumstances that can cause the demise of a relationship. It can take you years to get over someone you’re with for a few months, while you may be ready to move on immediately after ending a five-year marriage.

While these are no mathematical equations for getting over an ex, experts believe that some generalizations can be made. If you were with someone for less than two years, it’s reasonable to think you’ll be over them in about six months. Add another six months if your relationship lasted for two to four years. Longer relationships can take up to eighteen months to get over. Getting over a breakup can be especially challenging in today’s social media age. When you’re constantly bombarded by images of your ex on vacation in the Caribbean or moving on with someone else, your recovery time can be stretched out.

It’s easy to romanticize a relationship that has ended, especially if you feel like your ex was the the person you were meant to be with. It’s important to learn from your past mistakes and permit yourself to move on. If you’re feeling down, try not to be too hard on yourself and remember that you will get past this. Eventually, you’ll arrive at the point when happiness and hope for the future fill the void created by your broken relationship.
