At Del Mar, you are up close and personal with the racing families and their many followers, including celebrities that attend each year. Speaking of celeb’s, Mario Lopez and his wife, Courtney, were at this legendary racetrack, enjoying the festivities from their private celebrity suite. Judging from their Instagram photos and Snapchat, the Lopez family had a blast and promised to return next year.
The Del Mar event starts early and takes all of us way into the night with numerous after parties.
If you don’t live in the San Diego/Del Mar area, plan to check into one of the many fabulous hotels and enjoy all that a Del Mar weekend has to offer.
My favorites places to crash are Hilton San Diego Del Mar, Winner’s Circle Resort, and Del Mar Motel on the Beach. Be sure to book your room in advance as most rooms are booked a year in advance; partygoers from all over the globe are spending the weekend at Del Mar with the intention of tearing up the town from one party to the other.
It all began on a sunny afternoon on July 3, 1937 and the original laid-back Californian himself, Bing Crosby, stood at a turnstile collecting tickets for his new seaside racetrack, Del Mar. Having been bitten by the racing bug, Crosby and a bunch of his Hollywood buddies (among them Pat O’Brien, Oliver Hardy, and Gary Cooper) hatched the idea for a horse palace by the ocean where you could play all day, party all night, and leave the cares of the world behind. The group’s first meeting took place at Warner Brothers Studios in Burbank where the Del Mar Turf Club was formed. From the start, Hollywood fingerprints were all over this racetrack.
The Hollywood connection continued for decades at Del Mar with Mickey Rooney, Ava Gardner, Red Skelton, Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, and Jimmy Durante. What remains constant since 1937 is the feeling that no matter who you are, one of the best places you can be an on a sunny summer afternoon is at Del Mar, watching some of the most gifted horses and horsemen in the world try to reach the finish line first. The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is known for the slogans: “Where The Turf Meets The Surf” and “Cool as Ever.”
Get your hats! Place your bets! And away we go to Del Mar!
