How to Make Natural Food Coloring at Home

Natural food coloring does not contain any preservatives, plus they are packed with healthful compounds. Remember, most homemade food coloring is made from fruits and vegetables, so they contain some nutrients. The best part is that it is easy to make your own natural food coloring. To give you a better view, here are some ways to make food coloring at home.

1. Purple

To make purple food coloring, you’ll need about 1/4 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries and 2 teaspoons of water. If the blueberries are frozen, you need to thaw and drain them before making the food coloring.

To start making purple food coloring, you have to blend the blueberries and water in a high-speed food processor or blender until the mixture is smooth. Afterwards, you have to strain the mixture to remove the skin by using a fine mesh sieve. Finally, you have to store the mixture in an airtight container. This purple food coloring can last up to two weeks when stored in a refrigerator.

To use this food coloring, you can simply add one teaspoon to the batter, frosting, or icing.

2. Yellow

One of the best ways to make food coloring at home is to use food products with intense colors. For example, if you want to make yellow food coloring, you can use 1/2 teaspoon of ground turmeric and 1/4 cup of water.

The first step in making a yellow food coloring is to boil the water and turmeric in a small saucepan for about three to five minutes. Afterward, allow the solution to cool.

Keep in mind that turmeric can stain the container; thus, you need to use one that you don’t mind turning yellow. The natural food coloring can last up to two weeks

To use the food coloring, simply add a teaspoon of the solution to the batter, icing, and frosting. Always remember that turmeric can stain anything that it comes in contact with, including countertops. As such, you have to be careful when handling this solution.
