How to Be More Spiritual

Spirituality can be a true light in your life. Especially in times of crisis, like we are experiencing right now with the Coronavirus, it can be hard to connect with your spirituality. However, these are the times when spirituality matters the most. Once you have a deeper spiritual connection with both yourself and the world, things somehow just become easier. So, in times like these, it is more important than ever before to be more spiritual. But how do we go about doing that? It’s easier said than done, right? That’s not exactly true. Becoming more spiritual can be a simple journey that only takes 10 minutes a day. Here we are going to discuss simple ways to help you be more spiritual.

Spirituality Versus Religion

First, it’s important to understand that being more spiritual does not make you more religious. These are two very different things. Religion relates to an organized group of people worshiping or celebrating a set of beliefs together. Spirituality is an individual practice. It’s about only yourself and your connection to the world, and it usually involves finding a peace within yourself regardless of what your universal belief system is. More importantly, if your beliefs aren’t bringing you peace, then you should ask yourself why and work on finding a peace within yourself first.

Take Everything One Step at a Time

To become more spiritual, all you need to do is take at least 15 minutes a day for yourself. Find a quiet place to sit in which you feel very comfortable in. Relax each area of your body in turn. Then, check in with yourself. How are you feeling today? Acknowledge your true feelings mentally and physically. Accept them. If you aren’t feeling well, think through why that is. Really take the time to be comfortable with yourself and your feelings before you progress forward. Take baby steps. Maybe start with 10 minutes a day for a week. Then, the next week, increase your personal time to 15 minutes a day. Then 20 minutes the next week. Ideally, if you can build up to even 30 minutes a day, you will begin to be more in tune with yourself, which will make you feel better. Once you have taken the time to slowly become reacquainted with yourself, move on to something a little harder.

Meditate in Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a meditation in which you simply exist. Begin meditation the same way you have been practicing- by getting comfortable in a private place. Then, focus on each area of your body and relax it. What will make mindfulness different than what you have been doing is that instead of thinking on yourself, after you have acknowledged how you are feeling, just let everything go and exist without thought. If thoughts come into your brain, effortlessly re-direct them out of your brain. This may seem simple but it is much easier said that done. If you find it difficult to just exist without thinking, try to focus on your breath. Focus on your breath as you inhale, then exhale. Count each breath. So, inhale; exhale; 1. Inhale; exhale; 2. Count up to 10, and then start over as to not overwhelm yourself by counting too high. Connecting with your breath and getting rid of thoughts as you meditate can help re-train your brain, fight anxiety, and put you in a more spiritual state without even realizing it.

Show Gratitude and Understand the Law of Attraction

After you have become a pro at your daily mindfulness practice, try grounding yourself and connecting to the earth by showing gratitude. Now, within your 15-30 minute private time, begin the same way you have by getting comfortable and relaxing yourself. Now is the time to ground yourself. Feel your connection to the earth. You can do this by imagining your feet connecting in the ground by roots. Or you can imagine yourself touching the earth and being connected to your favorite places around the world. Perhaps you can imagine yourself sitting in the grass in your favorite national park. Be sure to experience loving thoughts and feelings, which will help you show appreciation to the earth as you are grounding to it. At this time, you are very spiritually open. So be sure to live in these feelings of love and happiness. Do this by remember the times that you were truly happy, feel your heart open, and experience all the love you have known in your life. Live in this feeling of good and send it out into the universe. The universe will reply by sending it back to you. We attract the feelings we put out into the world, so it’s important to feel positive emotions and push them out into the world while you’re in this state so positive energy comes back to you. After all, energy cannot be created nor destroyed. What you send out does come back to you.

Use What Works Best for You

After you have tried all of the exercises here, you can easily live in the one that works best for you. After all, your spirituality is about YOU only! Perhaps mindfulness worked best for you? Great! Make your daily routine more about mindfulness. Perhaps you loved checking in on yourself and living in your head. Sure! Just do daily check-ins during the time you set aside. Be sure to listen to yourself and do what makes you happy. By doing that and taking the daily time to continue focusing on yourself, you have officially become more spiritual.
