We live in the era of fast-food and trending diets. It’s so hard to keep up with the newest trends in nutrition and fitness, and it’s even harder to find a diet that actually suits your lifestyle and your body’s needs. I always had a difficult relationship with food, and finding something that works for me definitely wasn’t easy. I did a lot of research, tried most of the bigger diets out there, and came to one conclusion – nothing makes me feel as good, healthy, and energetic as a plant-based diet. And that comes as no surprise because a vegan diet really does wonders for our bodies. If you’re still not convinced, here’s how eating a plant-based diet can improve your health.
As I’ve already mentioned, I definitely had my fair share of problematic eating habits. And most of them were definitely triggered by my fluctuating weight. It seemed as if I would gain or lose weight for no apparent reason. Now, I know that those fluctuations were most likely triggered by my previous eating habits and the overly-processed animal-based foods that I’ve eaten every day. Since switching to a plant-based diet, it’s never been easier to maintain my goal weight. Plant-based foods are often lower in calories and higher in fiber than animal-based foods. That can lead to feelings of fullness and reduced calorie intake. This is especially important for those who are trying to lose weight for health reasons.
A Plant-Based Diet Reduces The Risk of Chronic Diseases
Did you know that a plant-based diet can also reduce the risk of chronic diseases? That includes illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, and even some auto-immune diseases. Plant-based diets are often rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals, all of which can help protect against disease. This will decrease inflammation, boost your immune system, and also make you more resilient. Chronic diseases are concerningly common nowadays, even among young adults. A lot of that has to do with our current eating habits.
Better Heart Health
One of the most significant benefits of a plant-based diet is improved heart health. This type of diet has been shown to lower cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and improve blood flow, all of which can lead to a reduced risk of heart disease. Cardiovascular disease is still the number one cause of death. And that comes as no surprise knowing that most of us consume concerning amounts of LDL cholesterol on a daily basis. In fact, several large studies have found that people who follow a plant-based diet are less likely to develop heart disease than those who consume a diet that includes meat.
A Plant-Based Diet Improves Your Gut Health
A plant-based diet is also beneficial for gut health. It is high in fiber, which helps keep the digestive system functioning properly and can prevent constipation and other digestive issues. Constipation has never been as common as it is today. And it’s all linked to our lifestyle habits. Heavy animal-based foods and office jobs where we don’t get up for hours are killing our peristaltic movements. Additionally, a diet that is rich in fermented foods, such as miso, sauerkraut, and kimchi, can help increase the number of beneficial bacteria in the gut, improving overall gut health.
