There are several herbs that are a great source of antidepressant and mineral components, which can take you away from the edge during those terrible days and even help with depression.

Here is a handy guide to the most potent foods and herbs with antidepressant properties, and how to grow them anywhere.

Chamomile

Why you should drink it: A cup of chamomile tea before going to bed contributes to a pleasant sleep. Chamomile is rich in caffeic acid, which is considered a stress reliever, so you can prepare a cup of tea by soaking chamomile flowers in boiling water, for about 10 minutes.

How to grow it: German chamomile is the best for teas, compared to other varieties that can give a more bitter taste. If you want to grow it at home, use a small container about six inches wide by six inches deep.

This crop requires full sun and should be planted at the end of spring, when there is no risk of very cold winds.

Lavender

Why you should smell it: According to several studies, aromatherapy treatments with lavender and other herbs are often used to supplement anxiety treatments, because the scent is very relaxing.

How to grow it: Plant lavender seed in a container made of a material that breathes, like terracotta, and choose a pot 12 inches wide by 12 inches deep. Place the pot in an area that receives a lot of sunlight; Lavender loves dry and sunny areas. English lavender is perfumed and edible, so you can add a few lavender flowers to your meals.

Chard

Why you should eat it: All types of chard have a large amount of magnesium, an essential nutrient for different biochemical reactions in the brain, which help to increase your energy levels. In fact, magnesium deficiency is a common condition amongst people diagnosed with clinical depression.

How to grow it: Chard is a strong crop that, if planted during the summer, it will produce until early winter. Choose a place where it’ll receive a good amount of sunlight, though.

The crop produces better with a lot of sun. Pick a container that is approximately 12 inches wide and 12 inches deep and fill it with a good organic potted soil. Sow between two and three seeds per pot. You can start harvesting the leaves as soon as they appear.

Oregano

Why you should eat it: Oregano is rich in caffeic acid, quercetin and rosmarinic acid, all major components that can help you fight depression, fatigue and anxiety.

How to grow it: Oregano, like most herbs, is very easy to harvest. Look for a seedling; add a little water, leaving part of the soil on the dry side. This crop is best in containers, but make sure your pot is large enough, at least 12 inches wide, because this plant tend to grow really fast.
