Have You Heard About Potato Milk Yet? The Benefits of Switching Over to Potato Milk

They are so many fantastic cow milk alternatives — almond milk, coconut milk, oat milk, soy milk… But have you heard about potato milk? Yup, you’ve read that right — potato milk. It’s a new and trending plant-based milk that’s not only rich in nutrients and good for the environment but also incredibly easy and affordable to make at home.

What is potato milk?

As I have already explained, potato milk is a plant-based milk alternative that is made from potatoes. Many people are a bit shocked when they first hear of it, and there is good reasoning behind it. First of all, no commercially made potato milk is available in US stores. For now, potato milk is exclusively made by a Swedish company named Veg of Lund. The product is called DUG, and it can be found in some European supermarkets. However, you can also order it online from Amazon.

DUG is a blend of potatoes, canola oil, and pea protein. It’s rich in both macro and micronutrients, such as antioxidants, minerals, vitamins, and proteins. You have three options when buying this plant-based milk: original, barista, and unsweetened. It’s great for baking and cooking, but also to add to your coffee, tea, cereal, or smoothies. Veg of Lund claims that their milk is not only delicious but also environmentally friendly. You can read more about that on their website.

Homemade potato milk

As great as DUG sounds, it’s a bit inconvenient to order it from overseas whenever you’re out of plant-based milk. But until we’ll be able to buy it in our local supermarkets, you can also make your own homemade potato milk. It’s pretty easy, and all you have to do is blend cooked potatoes with water. You can also give your milk some more flavor by adding ingredients such as vanilla extract, maple syrup, or stevia. Another great bonus is that potatoes are significantly cheaper than nuts such as almonds or macadamia. So if you’re on a budget, potato milk is the way to go.

The process is easy. All you have to do is boil one and a half cups of peeled and diced potatoes until they are tender, and blend them with one and a half cups of water. I would also recommend adding a couple of tablespoons of almonds. This will make the milk sweeter and give it a nicer texture. Get creative and add other ingredients as well — sweetener, cinnamon, cocoa powder, or vanilla extract. You can enjoy the milk either hot or cold. If you store it in a glass container in the fridge it should be good for a few days.

The bottom line

I have to warn you, the taste of homemade potato milk is something you’ll have to get used to. In addition to that, it’s pretty unlikely that you’ll master the recipe on your first attempt. The thing that most people say that the potato taste is very prominent and that you just have to add other ingredients to make the potato flavor go away. Try making it at home and put your own twist on the recipe. The texture might be a bit unusual as well, so make sure you blend it nicely and stir the mixture before consuming it.
