Handbag Essentials: What Should Be in Your Bag?

Like most people, I spend a lot of time on YouTube, watching and listening to different videos of all genres. The one type of video I constantly avoided was the “What’s in my bag” interviews with celebrities. Yet for some reason, those were the videos that dominated my algorithm in January. I finally caved and decided to watch them. And it’s safe to say that one video led me down a rabbit hole of millions of other handbag videos.

I used to consider such videos useless since I thought that they only consisted of formulaic Q-As with a celebrity about what’s in their bag. Who’d be interested in that?

But after having gone in-depth into watching and analyzing these videos, I’ve come to the conclusion that they’re much more than what I dismissed them to be. The kind of bags a woman carries says a lot about her personality and priorities. They’re more than just a fickle fashion statement; they’re accessories, they help to transport multiple things and they make our modern, complicated lives easier to navigate. Moreover, just like outfits and shoes, bags are also a means of communication and self-expression.

Most celebrities have their own take on what they deem to be handbag essentials. And most of them vary depending on their lifestyles and personalities. However, some things (The real essentials) remain common to all of them and are ones that you should always carry as well. They are:

  1. Mask and Hand Sanitizer: A must in times of COVID-19 and for a few years afterward.
  2. Keys: For your house, car, office or anywhere that you may need to enter.
  3. Napkin: To wipe something off.
  4. Handkerchief: In case you have a running nose or something gets in your eye.
  5. A box of tissues: If the handkerchief gets soiled.
  6. Face Wipes: So that you can refresh yourself on a hot day or after a tiring activity.
  7. Lip balm: To prevent chapped or dry lips. {A must in colder weather}
  8. A small bottle of water: If you get thirsty, you’ll always have something to sip. Plus, water is good for your skin and health!
  9. Phone: As if anyone can even step out without their phones.
  10. Sanitary Products: Tampons, pads, menstrual cups etc. Even if it isn’t that time of the month, it doesn’t hurt to carry one, just in case.

It’s important to keep in mind that depending on the weather and the occasion, the essentials and bag size may differ for each woman. So, do what best suits the situation.

FINAL TAKE:

It’s not necessary to have branded bags of YSL, Birkin, Prada or Alaia. Neither do you need the most, the latest or the most expensive celebrity favorites. It’s advisable to have just a few bags in standard colors: Black, White, Red, Grey, Nude/Neutral. Depending on your daily activities, you can decide on what kind of bag you want: Clutch, Tote, Sling or something else.  At the end of the day, a bag is only as useful as how it serves your purpose, so don’t feel ashamed of not buying into the ones that millions of magazines and influencers are pushing on you.
