Gucci Ad Called Out by British Regulators for Using ‘Unhealthily Thin’ Model

Gucci released an ad back in September 2015 that has angered the Advertising Standards Authority of Britain. It was ruled that the ad was “irresponsible” and that the model looked “unhealthily thin,” bringing up the debate again, how thin is too thin?

According the
The New York Times, the regulator said that the way the woman in the image posted elongated her torso and accentuated her waist, so that it appeared to be very small. It said her ‘somber facial expression and dark makeup, particularly around the eyes, made her face look gaunt.'”

The model in question

It’s known that in the modeling industry that women have to fit the dresses; it’s very rarely the other way around. You either fit them or you don’t. This has caused many models to be unhealthy and declared anorexic.

It was only in December of last year that the French Parliament approved measures prohibiting modeling agencies from hiring unhealthily thin models and requiring that altered photographs be labeled clearly. Now, models need to have a doctor’s certificate to state they are fit to work or the employers could be jailed or fined greatly.

If you watch the video, you will see the girl (pictured above) immediately on the right. You can see that her waist is not as thin as it appears in the photo. However, it is clear that she is not the only one in the video that might look dangerously thin.

What do you think of this debate? Do you think it’s time all major fashion houses and fashion capitals start requiring
the models be healthier?
