Are you a twenty-something-year-old who is struggling with the pressure to make the most out of your life before you turn 30? Or maybe you feel like your 20s are fleeting away before your eyes? If so, take a deep breath and relax – because you’re definitely not the only one. This isn’t one of our usual articles about beauty, lifestyle, or wellness. Instead, I want to take this as an opportunity to remind you that you’re twenties really aren’t as serious as you make them out to be.
Embracing the Journey
Okay, so let me further explain what I just said. When I say that your twenties aren’t as serious as you make them out to be, I don’t mean that you shouldn’t be working hard and doing everything you can to achieve your goals. What I mean is that everyone feels like they are not where they are supposed to be, at least for a short portion of that decade. And honestly, from a biological standpoint, that makes a lot of sense as well.
The frontal lobe of our brain, the part that’s responsible for critical thinking and executive functions, isn’t fully developed until we’re in our mid-twenties. And even when that happens, you won’t magically have the answer to all of your problems. We as humans are meant to grow, not just physically, but psychologically as well. And sometimes that growth comes with feelings of uncertainty, confusion, and self-doubt. However, it’s still growing, nevertheless.
Life is about losing and finding yourself over and over again. We often think that only teenagers have to deal with periods of depersonalization and a lost sense of identity. However, major life changes (that can often happen during our twenties) such as the loss of a loved one, marriage, childbirth, trauma, and even things such as moving to a different place or political and social changes can completely shake the perception of ourselves and the world around us out of the norm.
Define Success on Your Own Terms

So, what makes our twenties such a critical time in our lives? The childhood dreams that we had for ourselves, but also the fear of going against social norms. Remember how when you were younger, you thought that it would be so easy to achieve anything you wanted? I truly believed that I could be an actress, artist, astronaut, physician, scientist, and personal stylist all in the same lifetime. But once you grow up and realize how much time, effort, sacrifices, and energy it takes to make big things happen, you suddenly start feeling overwhelmed.
Of course, it’s easy to numb those feelings when you’re in your early twenties. You’re constantly going out, meeting new people, and simply busy being busy. However, once you reach that age where your friend group is settling down and all of you have stable jobs, you’re suddenly questioning if you’re wasting your youth chasing a dream that wasn’t even yours in the first place.
Conclusion — What Was This Rant About?
Okay, that was a lot of introspection for just one article. However, to sum things up and leave you with a few words of encouragement — everyone feels like their 20s are fleeting away. Why? Because they are. This is one of the busiest, most confusing, and stressful decades of your life. However, it can also be a decade of immense growth and personal development. But to achieve that, it’s important to do one thing — be honest with yourself. Whether you’re switching careers, moving to a new city, or starting a new chapter of your life, remember that it’s never too late to start living a life you feel is more aligned with your personal values.
