Dressing Age Appropriate: Why This Is the Biggest Lie Ever Told

Are you tired of being told what you should and shouldn’t wear based on your age? If so, you’re not alone. I’m so sick of people commenting on what is age-appropriate and what is not. Especially when it comes to fashion and makeup. So, if you’ve fallen victim to the idea of “dressing age appropriate” let me explain to you why that whole concept is absolute nonsense.

The Myth of Age-Appropriate Dressing

Let’s start by unraveling the myth of age-appropriate dressing. For decades, society has perpetuated the idea that certain clothing styles are only suitable for specific age groups. For example, the imaginary rule that says that you shouldn’t wear mini skirts if you’re over 40, or that young women shouldn’t dress too elegantly as it would make them look older. But honestly, who was coming up with these?

Have you seen JLo’s legs? That woman is over 50 years old, and it would be such a shame if all she wore were jeans and maxi skirts. On the other hand, what’s wrong with wearing vintage-inspired dresses and suits, even if you’re still a teen? Age is just a number, and fashion is supposed to be fun. So, if you want to wear mini skirts in your seventies or dress like Jackie Kennedy while you’re in your early twenties — you do you, boo.

Individual Style — The Long Forgotten Way of Living

Have you noticed how almost everyone is wearing the same outfit nowadays? Baggy jeans, Adidas Samba sneakers, tote bags, and basic shirts. Don’t get me wrong — I love that look! And I wear it myself. However, it also seems like we have lost any sense of personal style over the last decade. Honestly, I totally blame TikTok for this. The increase in microtrends and viral high-street trends is concerning, especially from an environmental standpoint. However, let’s not get too much into this in today’s article.

What I really wanted to talk about is the importance of personal style and finding items that you genuinely enjoy wearing. No matter if they are trendy or not. But most importantly — items that you’ll be able to wear for many years, if not decades, to come. Whether you’re 20 or 80, it’s important to embrace your individual style and wear what makes you feel confident, empowered, and true to yourself. And once you find out what you like, shopping will become a lot less overwhelming as well.

Let’s Defy Societal Norms

Last but not least, let me explain to you why “dressing age-appropriate” is absolute BS. In a world obsessed with youth and beauty, it’s easy to fall into the trap of conforming to societal norms and expectations. But why should we let society dictate how we dress and express ourselves? If I want to wear a crop top at 56, I will wear a crop top at 56. What makes the body of a 20-something-year-old woman so much more worthy of being shown off than the body of someone more mature?

At the end of the day, fashion is meant to be fun, liberating, and empowering. It’s a form of self-expression that knows no boundaries and transcends age, gender, and cultural norms. So let’s celebrate the beauty of fashion freedom and embrace the diversity of styles, tastes, and preferences that make each of us unique.
