Cowboy Culture Trend in Fashion: Yeehaw or Nah?

Okay, y’all—if you haven’t noticed by now, cowboy culture is everywhere in fashion. And I mean, everywhere. It’s no longer just something you pull out for Halloween or wear to a country concert. We’re talking full-on cowgirl vibes with a little bit of high fashion mixed in. From Beyoncé dropping country tracks (yep, you heard that right) to Bella Hadid embracing her inner country girl, the Western look has come back with a vengeance in 2024. And honestly? I’m so here for it.

Now, I know what you’re thinking—“Wasn’t this whole cowboy thing a trend a few years ago?” And yes, you’d be right. But this time, it feels different. It’s like cowboy core is having a second, much cooler and bigger moment. You know that feeling when you dig out an old pair of boots you forgot about, and suddenly, they’re your new favorite thing? That’s cowboy culture in fashion right now. It’s nostalgic but fresh, and everyone from celebrities to regular gals like you and me is enjoying it.

What Exactly Is Cowboy Core?

Let’s break it down. Cowboy core, also known as the Western aesthetic, is a whole vibe. It’s a blend of rustic, classic (but still trendy) Western elements and modern fashion—think cowboy boots, wide-brimmed hats, denim-on-denim, and fringe. But it’s not just about looking like you’re heading to a rodeo or a ranch. This trend has been softened, modernized, and made chic. It’s not so much about looking like you’re going to a rodeo, but about embracing the cowgirl aesthetic.

While we’ve seen cowboy-inspired outfits popping up every now and then for years, the trend is getting some serious attention right now. It’s been growing in popularity since 2022, but 2024 is when things really exploded. And the reason? Music, babe, music. Artists like Beyoncé, Lana Del Rey, and Taylor Swift are bringing country music back into the mainstream, and suddenly, we’re all thinking, “Maybe I need a pair of cowboy boots too…”

Why Is Cowboy Culture Coming Back Now?

Alright, let’s talk about what made cowboy core so hot in 2024. First up, Beyoncé. Yes, Queen B herself. A few months ago, she dropped some country-influenced tracks like “Texas Hold ‘Em” and the world lost its mind. Beyoncé is, of course, from Houston, Texas, so it makes sense that she’d return to her roots with a country sound. And the marketing she did for her latest album, “Act II”, had everyone rushing to stores to grab cowboy hats and boots.

But it’s not just her. We also have Lana Del Rey, the queen of sad-girl-pop music (aka my type of pop music), who is also going country with her upcoming album, “Lasso.” I mean, she did marry an alligator tour guide this year, so it totally makes sense, right?

Of course, let’s not forget about Taylor Swift, whose fans have been rocking cowgirl hats and boots for years—especially recently during her Eras Tour. She started her career as a country artist, and even though she’s THE pop star of the century currently, the re-release of her older albums helped popularize the cowgirl aesthetic even further.

Finally, there’s our favorite fashion icon – Bella Hadid. She has also decided to add a little cowboy flair to her wardrobe. Considering that she’s always been obsessed with horses and nature and that she’s also currently dating a real-life cowboy, this comes as no surprise either. And honestly, if Bella Hadid is wearing a cowboy hat and denim-on-denim, then the rest of the girlies will as well.

How’s Cowboy Core Different This Time Around?

While cowboy aesthetics have been around for ages, there’s something about 2024 that feels a little more intentional. It’s less “I’m dressing up for a rodeo” and more “I’m just casually strolling into the grocery store in my cowboy boots, and I’m looking good doing it.” The key is balancing that Western look with some modern elements. Think of it like mixing a little bit of country with city-girl chic.

Fashion’s biggest names have really leaned into the Western vibe this year, too. The runways were full of it—Louis Vuitton, Diesel, Chloe, and more. Pharrell, who’s the creative director at Louis Vuitton, went all out for his FW24 menswear collection with embroidered suits, chunky belts, and yes—cowboy hats. He even called it the “Yeehaw Agenda,” which honestly, I’m here for.

And for us everyday gals who aren’t exactly buying designer? There are plenty of options in high street fashion stores as well. From Zara having a whole collection inspired by this aesthetic to H&M and Mango offering plenty of variations of cowboy boots. You’ll be able to find something that’s within your budget without any issues at all.

How to Make Cowboy Core Your Own

Okay, so now you’re probably wondering, “How do I wear cowboy core without looking like I just walked off a ranch?” Don’t worry, girl—I’ve got you. The beauty of this trend is that you can make it as subtle or as bold as you like.

Cowboy Boots Are a Must: This is the foundation of cowboy core, and if you’re not rocking boots, you’re missing out. Find a pair that feels you. You don’t have to spend a ton—there are tons of affordable options that look cute and will last forever. Of course, I’ll always advocate to opt for vegan leather, as it’s not only cruelty-free but also more sustainable.

Cowboy Hats, Baby: If you’re ready to take this trend head-on, a cowboy hat is a must. Don’t think you need to wear it every day, but it’s a cute way to add some Western flair to a casual look. Keep it neutral, like Bella Hadid’s black one, or go for a fun pop of color.

Fringe & Denim: You can never go wrong with denim-on-denim. A classic jean jacket, flared pants, or even a denim skirt will get you partway there. To really take it to the next level, add a fringe jacket or bag. Fringe gives off major cowgirl vibes without you looking like you’re headed to a rodeo.

Bolo Ties & Turquoise: For those of you who want to get a little more Western, try adding a bolo tie or some turquoise jewelry to your outfit. It’s a small detail but makes a huge difference.

Keep it Balanced: Cowboy core doesn’t mean you have to go full country every day. The key is balancing out those Western pieces with some of your other favorite styles. Pair those boots with a flowy dress or a cute blazer. Add a cowboy hat to your favorite band tee. Mix and match until it feels just right for you.

Final Thoughts

Cowboy core is here, and it’s staying for the long haul. Whether you’re a country music fan or just love the look of a good pair of boots, this trend has something for everyone. It’s all about embracing that Western charm, but doing it in a way that fits your personal style. So, if you haven’t already, it’s time to embrace the cowboy life—because if it’s good enough for Beyoncé, it’s good enough for all of us. Yeehaw, baby.
