Hugely popular “Game of Thrones” is using faux IKEA rugs for costumes!
In case you didn’t know, HBO’s “Game of Thrones” is back again with the greatly anticipated season seven! And as fans across the world watch with eager excitement, some might be wondering what the fur-
like costumes are made of? Well, guess what, the Night’s Watch military uniforms are made of…IKEA throw rugs!
That’s right! Michele Clapton, costumer on the show, revealed that the design team used IKEA rugs as part of the costumes! In fact, “GOT” fave, Jon Snow, is also outfitted in IKEA rugs! Clapton said her crew cut, shaved
, and added straps to the rugs to make them look worn before they were added to the battalion member’s costumes. She went on to say that making them look old and destroyed is important as this look is “like a religion” on “GOT”.
However, it’s not like the wardrobe department necessarily has to worry about the cost on “GOT”
as each episode is now budgeted at $10 million per show. But the wardrobe department likes these furry capes! Clapton said, “I’m sadly not allowed to show you fitting photos. It’s a shame, as they give such an insight into the process of design and how they help the actor find the character. For instance, here, the way the weight affected his gait. These capes are actually IKEA rugs. We take anything we can.”
In regards to making the costumes appear as real as possible to the viewer, she said, “I want the audience to almost smell the costumes.”
Indeed, it is great news to hear that a series with a budget to certainly afford real fur, has decided instead to opt for faux fur rugs from IKEA! We hope that other shows will follow suit and say no to real fur and yes to faux!
