Many boycott NARS as it announces it is no longer cruelty-free.
Popular cosmetic brand, NARS Cosmetics, has announced that is no longer a cruelty-free brand. Why? They are adopting this stance to enter into the Chinese cosmetics market.
This move has upset legions of NARS fans as animal testing is mandatory for all cosmetic companies in China. As a result, many have now boycotted the once popular brand by saying that they are putting “money over principles”, while others are using the hashtag #boycottnars.
NARS decided to share an IG post explaining that while there are against animal testing and will remain cruelty-free in other areas of the world, it was necessary for them to begin to sell in China.
NARS said in their statement, ” We want you to know that we hear you. The global elimination of animal testing needs to happen. We firmly believe that product and ingredient safety can be proven by non-animal methods, but we must comply with the local laws of the markets in which we operate, including China. We have decided to make NARS available in China because we feel it is important to bring our vision of beauty and artistry to fans in the region. NARS does not test on animals or ask others to do so on our behalf, except where required by law. NARS is committed and actively working to advance alternative testing methods. We are proud to support the Institute for In Vitro Sciences, a globally recognized organization at the forefront of advancing non-animal methods in China and around the world. NARS is hopeful that together, we can work toward a cruelty-free world.”
But this statement did not stop consumers from boycotting the brand. One person said, “Surely the principles should be greater than profits. Shame on you.”
And another added, “All you have achieved with this post is proving that ultimately you care more about cashing in on the Chinese market rather than subjecting animals to horrendous lab testing.”
Many are projecting China to become the largest market for cosmetics and personal care products worldwide. And among the current best sellers are cosmetic giants L’Oreal, Benefit Cosmetics, Rimmel London and Shiseido.
What do YOU think? Should NARS branch out to China or continue to stay cruelty-free?
