Let’s face it, gifting at work is difficult, especially when you have no idea what the person’s likes or dislikes are. Believe it or not there is an entire etiquette surrounding workplace gifting and it is definitely something that you are going to need to adhere to, at least if you expect to make an impact without bein unprofessional. We’re going to discuss a few of the things that are off limits, and discuss some of the things that you should absolutely consider giving as a Secret Santa.
Don’t Buy your coworkers anything monogrammed. You aren’t that familiar with them and they might want to regift your item at some point. This includes coffee mugs, picture frames, ties, totes, and anything else you can monogram.
Don’t Buy them clothing. You don’t know your coworkers well enough to be making fashion choices for them, and to be perfectly honest, buying someone clothing is really an intimate thing to do. Are you intimate with them? If not, then don’t buy them clothing! OK, maybe a hat.
Don’t get them a coffee mug. Okay this one probably seems a bit odd considering you’re working in an office and the entire thing probably revolves around coffee, but there are a few problems with this. You see, they already have a coffee mug, and unless you saw them break theirs, intentionally or unintentionally, then they don’t need another. Furthermore, they don’t want to think about you every single time they’re taking their morning caffeine infusion. Seriously, they don’t want it. Coffee time is alone time, just remember that.
Don’t Purchase household items for your co-workers. Simple items like kitchen utensils, alarm clocks, and even picture frames should be left to them to choose. Unless they specifically stated a need for such items in a very loud way, they haven’t hired you to be their new interior decorator.
Do get them useful items! Themed flash drives, something industry specific, and even items for travel or an afternoon out are a great idea.
Do buy them gift cards! You’ve probably noticed that gifting in the workplace is like walking on eggshells; there are so many inappropriate gifts and so few that can actually be considered appropriate. That being the case, you need to make sure that you’re getting them something they can immediately use, and a gift card to a retail store, a restaurant, or a coffee shop is extremely useful to anyone.
Do check out the latest gadgets. There are some cool, highly affordable toys out there, and there’s nothing quite like having the latest and greatest – maybe something even your friends haven’t even heard about. These are things that can let your co-workers have their moment in the limelight and definitely gifts to remember.
Buying gifts in the workplace can definitely be a challenge but it doesn’t have to be impossible by any stretch of the imagination. Follow the tips we’ve given you and have an outstanding gift giving experience in the office this holiday season.
