Women are kicking butt in the stunt industry!
Women have been a vital force in the entertainment industry since its inception. Previously, they had worked in the makeup and wardrobe departments, as actresses, as script supervisors, and as many other crucial roles in filmmaking. In the last 20 years, women have started to take on the role of direction, producer, and writer more often and more notably. Now, in a primarily male dominated profession, women are beginning to make their presence known in the stunt industry.
This makes perfect sense as women are increasingly playing leading roles in action films. Strong, lead female characters are able to hold box office success and Hollywood is listening. Movies such as “Wonder Woman”, “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”, “The Hunger Games”, “Atomic Blonde”, “Resident Evil” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” have made stars out of Charlize Theron, Angelina Jolie, Milla Jovovich, and others. With this success comes the need for female stunt women.
Women who might have previously been athletes in other fields such as gymnastics, dance, and bodybuilding are now making the segue into the entertainment industry as powerful stunt women. They are showing the world that physically challenging professions once reserved for men alone are now open to women. And, indeed, other professions and sports such as body building, wrestling, and racecar driving are also seeing women excel. In fact, in some cases, women are not only viewed as equal in these arenas, they actually excel over their male counterparts! Look at race car driver Danica Patrick and rock climber Lynn Hill! Women are showing the world what they are made of when it comes to stunts in the entertainment industry!
Watch these women make their mark in the stunt industry. There are more of them than you think and they are definitely here to stay!
