Veganism in the U.K.: What We Can Learn from Them

In the last decade, there’s been a rapid rise in the number of people adopting vegan and vegetarian lifestyles in the U.K. There are now over half a million vegans in the country and the need for plant-based beverages, snacks and meals is at an all-time high. Veganism is now a rapidly growing lifestyle movement in Britain thanks to its perceived health benefits, and we in the States can learn a lot and gain inspiration from this way of life.

Supporters of plant-based eating swear by its many health benefits including lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels and reduced risk of heart disease. Studies have linked a vegan diet to a lower body mass index. Many people are also saying no to animal-derived products due to the welfare and environmental issues associated with them. This growth in veganism in the U.K is only likely to continue with more and more consumers becoming savvy about the health implications of dairy and meat products and the reality of the farming industry.

The Rise of Vegan Beauty

In this increasingly vegan positive nation, veganism has also made its way into the world of beauty. People are becoming more aware and turning away from their favorite skincare and makeup products because of their harmful ingredients. Many of the products of major players in the beauty market also contain animal by-products.

More people in the U.K are actively seeking skincare and beauty products that are made without any animal-derived ingredients. They have a wide range of brands to choose from like Sister & Co., Green People, Ananné, Organic Pharmacy, and Alima Pure which are entirely animal by-product and cruelty-free.

Leading Brands Are Embracing the Vegan Trend

Amidst the rise in vegan eating, many brands are launching their own vegan lines. Tesco, the largest supermarket chain in the U.K, recently launched a range of 100% plant-based meals. This includes 18 vegan-friendly meals along with sandwiches, wraps, and salads. Online grocer Ocado has a dedicated vegan site and recently added 90 more products to it.

Pret a Manger is another brand on board with the vegan trend. It brought out a range of vegan meals that contain fresh herbs and vegetables. There are also several brands dedicated to making high-quality vegan products like Follow Your Heart, Booja-Booja, Amy’s Kitchen, Tofurky, and Sgaia Foods.

With so many options available in both large cities and smaller towns, Britons are finding it easier than ever to make the switch to a vegan lifestyle. So why is it so hard for the smaller U.S. cities and the majority of American citizens to get on board? it’s often because it’s not available, especially at an affordable price. If vegan food is not available, they won’t buy it. Note to grocers and restaurateurs: make it available and they will come!
