Your favorite 80’s and 90’s hair accessory, the Scrunchie, is back!
Most of us remember the scrunchie. We wore them in bright Barbie pink, turquoise and metallic gold. Some had sunflowers on them. Others had stars. And they were an absolute necessity at aerobics or jazzercise class. Today, you might consider them as passé as shoulder pads or neon. But believe it or not, the scrunchie is back!
You heard right, ICYDK, the scrunchie is trending big time for 2017! They’ve recently been on the runways for Vivienne Westwood, Missoni and Louis Vuitton. And Marc Jacobs is creating scrunchies for his street wear line. Even Topshop and American Apparel are getting into the action with their own lines of scrunchies!
The scrunchie was patented in 1986 by Rommy Revson. She originally called it the “scunci” after her pet poodle. However, it can also be attributed to a woman from Vancouver, Jane Reid, who had some on display at a hair accessories show in the late 1970s. Regardless of the true origins, there are several strong supporters out there who can’t get enough scrunchies!
Who’s been wearing them lately? None other than model-of-the-moment Cara Delevigne, Madonna, Rita Ora, Sienna Miller, Miley Cyrus, and 90’s darling Jennifer Aniston! Even Hillary Clinton was seen wearing a scrunchie!
Other supporters include Tina Outen, a stylist, who said, “They represented attitude, which feels like what young London is all about at the moment. I’d have fun with them: layering a few brights hides a multitude of sins if you haven’t got that ponytail perfect, and they can add instant volume.”
The re-birth of the scrunchie might have started way back in 2012 when the Olympics were in London. Athletes were seen wearing scrunchies with their leotards. Today, they are making a comeback now more than ever!
What do YOU think? Will you start to wear scrunchies again? Or do you think they will never come back in style?
