What was everyone wearing at The Met Gala 2017?

The invitation for The Met Gala requested guests to please dress “avant-garde”. One wonders what that really means? Well, it was certainly left up to personal interpretation as stars and celebrities gathered on Monday night for the annual fund-raising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

Avant-garde means new, unusual or experimental, especially in the arts, or the people introducing them. It also means to be groundbreaking, trailblazing and revolutionary. And in what is known as one of the biggest celebrity filled events of the year, there were hits and misses when it came to avant-garde fashion.

Rihanna entered the gala wearing Comme des Garcons. Vogue said her futuristic costume was “inspired by 18th-century punks and consisted of floral fabrics that were layered and pulled apart to look like petals.” One Twitter commenter wrote, “Rihanna won the #MetGala again. Good night everyone.” And another said, “Rihanna has outdone herself, I didn’t think that was possible at this point.”

Caroline Kennedy also wore Commes Des Garcons and was accompanied by her son, Jack Schlossberg. This gown, however, looked unflattering to her figure as some said it looked like a lampshade.

Kendall Jenner wore La Perla Couture and her gown was created by Julia Haart, creative director of La Perla. She said, “When I created the dress, it was made with (Kendall) in mind. The number encompasses what the star represents-it’s sensual and revealing, but also simple and easy.” Kendall’s dress had an unbelievable 85,000 crystals on it! And here’s the crazy part about this dress: there was no fabric used to create it!

ICYDK, the crystals were strung together by a single thread. You heard correctly…one thread. The body of the dress was created by combining painted lace with macramé. To create Kendall’s dress, it took literally hundreds of hours, 60 people and five cities to travel!

Indian superstar, Priyanka Chopra wore what seemed to be a long trench coat by Ralph Lauren. Many were confused by her choice and took to social media to comment on her gown. One Twitter follower said, “BREAKING: Priyanka Chopra has been announced as the new ambassador for Swacch Bharat Abhiyan for cleaning the streets in an innovative way.” While another said, “ Other actors: Sweep the awards. Priyanka Chopra: Sweep the floors.”

Elle Fanning wore an elegant ice blue gown by Miu Miu. But critics said she was channeling Disney’s Frozen this year.

Perhaps this year’s Met Gala can be described as a “wear what you want to” event. It was anything goes in the world of avant-garde fashion 2017!

You might have seen me as the face of Stila, Clear Essence, Nars, Herbalife, Youthful Luster Skincare and Classified Cosmetics. I was a model with the Wilhelmina Agency in Los Angeles for several years. I’ve also been an actor for over a decade and learned a lot about beauty, skincare and fashion in the process. I've worked with everyone from "hairstylist to the stars" Chris McMillan to makeup legend Paul Starr. I’m asked by women, “Excuse me, what lotion do you use?” “What do you use on your hair? I’ve been stopped on elevators, in the mall, restaurants, you name it. And I’ve received emails from as far away as Japan and South America from complete strangers asking me about beauty tips. I’m not saying this to toot my own horn, but to illustrate the fact women ask me about skincare, makeup and fashion. A lot. I believe in every woman's ability to be beautiful. And what I’ve learned, I’d love to share with you.
