The Future of Cosmetics Packaging – Will Everything be Refillable?

Can we predict how we’ll be disposing of our makeup in the future?

Can you imagine a time when we will never have to discard our makeup containers again? Is a time coming when all we have to do is refill them?

Yes, in the future we will never have to throw away an old lipstick again. We will be refilling them along with a lot of other makeup items too. As it stands, approximately 61 percent of cosmetics are packaged in plastic and that is a LOT of waste that will be thrown away. As you know, plastic takes a long time to decompose, so cosmetic companies are thinking of new and innovative ways to create more environmentally-friendly versions of today’s packaging.

Think for a moment how many empty lipstick containers, bottles of foundation, powder compacts, and eye shadow palettes you have thrown away in the past. All of this waste ends up in landfills and it takes approximately 1,000 years to decompose!

Companies are now offering alternatives to using so much plastic. For example, L’Occitane Shower Oil now comes in refill pouches that you can pour into the original bottle. This saves up to 80% of the plastic used in the original bottle. Dior also offers refills in its makeup, skincare, and fragrance.

Other companies offer bonuses if you recycle containers. For example, if you return five empty pots to Lush, you will get a free face mask! Lush will then recycle the pots or use them as art material! Also, when you take a bottle back to Kiehl’s, you will get a stamp. When you have 10 stamps, you will get a free travel-sized product!

There are many ways that we will be saving plastic and recycling in the years to come. You can do your part by always remembering to recycle as much out of your home as possible. It may take more time, but our environment is worth it.
