Shawn Mendes Was The Big Winner At The MTV EMA’s 2017

Pop star Shawn Mendes was crowned as the big winner at the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs). The Canadian artist picked up three prizes including the first best artist award.

The 19-year-old won over Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus and Kendrick Lamar. Mendes also took home the best song prize for “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back” and the best fans award during the EMA’s ceremony at the SSE Wembley Arena in London.

Other major winners of the evening were Sheeran who won the best live category, newcomer Dua Lipa was awarded the best new artist, while Coldplay were named best rock act.

Eminem opened the show performing his new single “Walk On Water” before being named best hip-hop act. Stormzy, Clean Bandit and Liam Payne were also among the performers for the evening. The event, hosted by singer Rita Ora, was also attended by London mayor Sadiq Khan who helped bring the EMAs to the European capital as part of his LondonIsOpen campaign.

The Grenfell Tower fire tragedy was referenced when Ora took the stage to receive the first MTV Power Of Music award on behalf of 50 British artists who contributed to the charity cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”.
