Selena Gomez is closing the year with a bang. The 25-year-old’s top-charting single “Bad Liar” was well-received by music critics and audiences alike when she released it in May, and now the track has been named the N°1 song in Billboard‘s 100 Best Songs of 2017 list.
The talented singer rise to the top over other 99 other hit songs to take the coveted number one slot as the publication called the song “a weird little moment of frustrated melody and imperfect romance that may prove to be a high point in Gomez’s increasingly fascinating career.”
Gomez — who was also named “Woman of the Year” by Billboard and gave a moving speech while accepting the recognition last month — also charts at No. 39 with Kygo for their song “It Ain’t Me,” and announced that she’ll be back into the studio working in her new album for 2018.
“Currently. Until the next year. Here’s where I’ll be,” she wrote Monday, December 11, on Instagram and published a photo of herself in the recording booth.
While promoting “Bad Liar” after its release, Gomez revealed she had been holding onto the song for “about a year.”
While the former Disney star can’t wait to release more music out to her fans, she’s also happy in taking her time. “I like how we’ve presented the music this year, because it wasn’t in an aggressive way; it felt very genuine,” Gomez said to Billboard for her cover story.
This great honor comes in an eventful year for the star, which included some time off recovering from her kidney transplant this summer due to complications with lupus, the autoimmune disease she was diagnosed with in 2013.
“I’ve canceled the past two tours I’ve done, so that’s something I’ve considered deeply too,” Gomez said about taking her music trajectory to the next level. “How will I step on that stage and just completely own it and wear it proudly?”
The songstress has also talked about how she’s feeling more comfortable with herself. “It’s that feeling when you’re obsessed with someone, when you first initially — I always say the ‘honeymoon stage’ — and I’m a sucker for that feeling,” she said in a previous interview this year “It’s more about that feeling that you can’t keep it cool. It’s just what I’m feeling at this exact moment, and I don’t know how to play it cool. I’m not that girl. I’m very much, ‘This is who I am. This is kind of what you get.’ And it’s worked out for me so far.”
Other artists included in the top 10 were Cardi B for “Bodak Yellow,” Kendrick Lamar for “HUMBLE,” Harry Styles for “Sign of the Times” and Gomez’s on-again boyfriend Justin Bieber for his hit song “Despacito” with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.
