Screen Actors Guild Announce 2018’s Nominees and All Female Presenters

Actresses Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash announced the nominations for the 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards. This year’s show is set to make history with its first ever host, actress Kristen Bell, and a telecast composed with only women presenters.

“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” leads the nominations with 4 noms, including “Outstanding Performance by a Cast”, “Actress” with Frances McDormand and two slots in the Supporting Actor category for Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell.

Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird” is nominated in three categories, including the major one “Outstanding Cast.”

As a way to reflect the current social climate and the push for greater female visibility, executive producer Kathy Connell proposed an all women presenters slate to Sandra Dewey, president at Turner.

“I want to salute women who are coming forward to speak at a very difficult time about very difficult subjects at great risk to themselves,” Connell said.

As a result, all 13 of the acting categories, including the two stunt categories, which are typically given before the broadcast ceremony, will be handed out by female presenters. The only exception will be the “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture” category since it’ll be introduced by both men and women, but the award will be presented by a woman.

The show’s first-ever host will be Kristen Bell. “I’m not the first female host,” the Good Place star said. “I’m the first host. The fact that a female was chosen to be the first one means my genitals become irrelevant.”

Of course, men will be part of the celebration and honored. “We don’t want to slight the men who have given great performances this year—knowing our membership, I’m sure our men will embrace the opportunity to honor women,” Connell added.

Meanwhile Dewey said, “For so many years there’s been so much ground to cover in terms of trying to have women statistically catch up.”

The 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2018 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. TBS and TNT subscribers can also enjoy the award show using the networks’ websites and mobile apps.
