Russell Hannon Gives You Travel Tips to Help You Save Money on Your Vacation

It’s clear that one of the biggest reasons people don’t travel is because they don’t have the money to do so. In fact, most experts say that’s one of the biggest obstacles that keeps people at home. I had the pleasure of speaking with Russell Hannon at the Travel and Adventure Show in San Diego, and he told me that his book “Stop Dreaming Start Traveling: The Ultimate Guide to Traveling More and Spending Less” came about because he couldn’t afford to travel. Then, he applied the lean principle from his work to his travel, and everything changed. (For those who don’t know, lean means creating more value for customers with fewer resources.) He told me, “It’s about how you travel and not where you go.”

Now, he travels around giving lectures and advice on how to cut the cost of travel. Russell’s book “Stop Dreaming… Start Traveling” is a hit, helping families across the country save money on their trips. If you go to his website, “Break the Travel Barrier”, you can input your email address for a free guide on how to save on travel.

Russell provided me with some of his tips, and I’m here to share a few of my favorites with you:

  • If you are not finding a flight at the price that you want, set up price alerts for your desired itinerary on either AirfareWatchdog.com or FareCompare.com. They will send you email alerts of the lowest fares for your trip as they come about.
  • Usually, when you book a hotel, you can cancel at no penalty until 6pm on the day of check-in. Try to book a room under these terms so you can lock in your desired location and price today, but if something better comes along, you can cancel the hotel and re-book at your lower rate.
  • You’d be surprised how many people don’t know to delete their cookies on their PC while looking for flights. One of Russell’s tips reminds you how important it is to do that.

And, personally, I loved the amount of non-mainstream booking websites Russell provides in his tips. There are so many sites that allow you to travel in different ways that you don’t know about. In Russell’s list of tips, he provides dozens. For example, FreeCampsites.net provides an app with pins of free campsites around the country, and it even shows you the amenities they offer.

As you can see, you can easily apply Russell’s tips to help save yourself money for your travels. I’d also like to point out that getting the right credit card for you is also imperative to saving money on your travels. There are many cards that provide you with frequent flier miles for your purchase, and you should absolutely look at weighing the benefits of each of these credit cards to see which is right for you. If you go with one through a company you regularly use, you can amp up free flights very quickly.
