An Old, New Romance with Capri
Capri, an island in Italy bears the distinction of being a top destination for both Italians and foreigners alike. Over time it has become very popular, gaining more momentum in the 1950’s. Today, the island is often not considered an absolute vacation destination, but often thought to be more for day trips. Capri is a great distraction for many, but it is also one of the most amazing vacation spots off the coast of Italy. Fun fact: Capri pants were named after it!
As you walk through Capri you are undoubtedly going to run into a wide range of wildlife including quail, robins, peregrine falcons, blackbirds, and much more. If you’re very lucky, you might even find yourself face to face with the blue lizard of Faraglioni. Now in the event you haven’t come to the island of Capri to see the wildlife, you’re probably going to want to visit some of the local landmarks, and why not? Capri is home to twelve churches, a plethora of monuments, and even seven different museums.
The bottom line, is you’re never going to run out of things to do in Capri and you certainly won’t be bored. It’s no wonder that Capri is a popular vacation destination!
Getting Around the Island
One thing that people find to be a bit troublesome on Capri is the lack of cars, and if you are going to visit you must become used to traveling to the main area via ferry or hydrofoil. As for getting around the island proper, if you don’t want to walk, there is a bus service that connects to Marina Grand, Anacapri and Marina Grande. Make sure you check the bus schedules and destinations so you know where you’re going and most importantly, how you’re going to get there.
Noteworthy Destinations on the Island of Capri
Capri has some cool places for you to visit; no one can deny that. We don’t have enough room to list every single one of them but we are going to cover three of the coolest sights and destinations for you to put on your list. If you only visit Capri once in your lifetime, make sure you see these places:
Historic Centre of Capri
There are two different areas to see here, one of which is a gated community, but the other is open for walking, and the two districts, are designed specifically to deter Saracen raiders, being so easy to barricade. You’re going to see some amazing architecture here, and it’s going to take you back to a time you can’t remember.
If you’re interested in seeing some history, then you’re going to want to walk this road. The scenery is incredible, and it leads out to the Belvedere, opening into the Farglioni as you continue onward. You’re going to see some remnants of the ancient Greek colonization. Finally, there is Villa Le Certosella which shows remnants of a Roman residential complex, survived only by an ancient marble floor where the beautiful structure once stood. It’s only a memory, but it’s a memory worth experiencing.
Path of Forts
This sites on the west coast of the island and provides visitors an amazing and long route showing off the wonders of the Mediterranean. The path was built during the Saracen invasions, and it’s an amazing reminder of the island’s past. Fortunately, where artillery once stood, you will only hear the roar of the ocean.
A Bite to Eat on Capri
The sightseeing is incredible, but at some point you’re going to want to get a bite to eat. There are several great restaurants on Capri but we’re only going to cover two of them:
When you’re thinking of an Italian restaurant, this is probably exactly what you had in mind. Al Capri is an oceanfront restaurant with an amazing menu offering all the flavors of Italy including clams, paccheri, squid, and potatoes. Of course, it wouldn’t be much of an Italian restaurant without a pizzeria, and the pizzas are even cooked in a wood oven. Don’t forget to stop by, even if it’s only for the desserts.
If you’re not strictly looking for Italian cuisine, don’t forget to check out Mister Billy. The restaurant is a bit light on atmosphere, but the architecture is top notch and they serve some of the greatest burgers known to man. This includes the Americano and the Mister Billy, both of which have become local legend.
Finally, we come to the shopping opportunities on the island of Capri. There are quite a few to choose from but we’re only going to delve into two of them:
Capannina Più gourmet – Capri
This gourmet shop is impossible to miss, situated right in the center of Capri. It’s a great place to buy samples of the local food, as well as browse sample of international products. From wines, to liquors, and food, you have you pick of some of the most amazing items from around the world. Don’t worry, if you want to take a souvenir back home there are plenty of great gifts, including hand crafted items only available on the island of Capri.
This is the ultimate gift shop whether you’re looking for a vase, a watch, or even a necklace. If you want a special gift to take back home with you, then you’ve come to the right place.
