Oops, a Steve Harvey Moment at the Oscars! And Best Picture Goes to…..
WTF, seriously confusing moment at the Academy Awards as WRONG film is named Best Picture!
In what can only be described as a “Steve Harvey Moment”, an extremely confusing snafu happened at the very end of the 89th Annual Academy Awards Ceremony tonight. Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway accidentally announced that La La Land was named Best Picture of the Year. To the surprise and utter shock of everyone, Moonlight was actually Best Picture!
Beatty seemed confused as he read the winner’s name to himself. He then re-read it and looked at his co-presenter Faye Dunaway in confusion. Many thought he was merely milking the moment for effect, but he was clearly confused. Faye then took the lead for him and announced La La Land as Best Picture. As the cast and crew of LaLa Land were giving their acceptance speeches, you could see people dashing across the stage behind them as if something dramatic may be going on. Very soon after, with LaLa Land still on stage, a correction was made: La La Land was not Best Picture, but Moonlight was. For a moment, no one seemed to understand what was being said. Despite the disclaimer that “this is not a joke”, many were still certain that “this must be some sort of bizarre joke?” Kimmel even joked that it was “Personally, I blame Steve Harvey.” But who was wrong?
The card for Best Picture with “Moonlight” clearly displayed at the top was shown publicly to the audience and cameras immediately once the error was announced. Everyone was in damage control mode and eager to show genuine transparency by announcing every bit of what had happened. It seemed that it was only after Warren Beatty explained that he had opened the card and saw “Emma Stone, La La Land” that what had happened began to sink in. Apparently, he was given the incorrect card, the card for the previous award for Emma Stone’s win for Best Actress. That certainly explains his confusion and hesitance when he read it! Why would they list an actor for the Best Picture win?! Put on the spot and with the ole “show must go on”, the card was read.
It was La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz who let everyone know of this error and quickly held up the card. He then handed the award over to Adele Romanski, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner, producers of Moonlight stating “I’m gonna be really proud to hand this to my friends from Moonlight.” Those associated with La La Land quickly and graciously accepted this change as shock and disbelief still swept the auditorium, and certainly the Moonlight team.
The Moonlight team was extraordinary in accepting this award and expressing their appreciation and love for the La La Land crew. The acceptance speeches by both films for this one award were wonderful and powerful. To my knowledge, this has never happened before in the history of the Academy Awards. but I am glad that we got to hear what they all had to say! haha
Host Jimmy Kimmel gallantly glossed over the confusion, and accepted blame, closing the show with audience members still clearly confused and in shock.
Congratulations on Moonlight on winning Best Picture this year!
