Major shift in the modeling industry

At one point or another, most women had dreams of becoming a model. Whether you day dreamt of ripping the runway at a Victoria’s Secret Fashion show, or lounging by the pool in your favorite musicians video, chances are, you thought of it!

Maybe you outgrew that phase, or perhaps you thought you were too big, too short, or not “graceful” enough. Well, girls these days can stop doubting themselves because the idea that beauty is 6’0”, 115 pounds is on its way out! (See Tess Holliday, Ashley Graham, and Orange is the New Black’s Laverne Cox.)

In a society where we are now being taught to embrace various body types, when the ads around us are finally starting to tell us that whether we are athletic, skinny, or plus-sized, we are in fact beautiful – will we ever be fully able to move away from the mass belief that “thinner is better”?

Straight/Curve, a documentary directed by Jenny McQuaile, set to release Summer 2016 aims to examine and redefine the beauty standards put forth by the fashion industry. When, how and why did a size zero become the norm when two thirds of women sit between a size 10 to 14?

“As a former model, I know the feeling. The media puts and immense amount of pressure on people to look a certain way. Barriers are slowly, but surely being broken down, progress is being made, and acceptance is being created. I’m hoping that we will continue to see more body types being celebrated and less photo shopping. Documentaries such as Straight/Curve are long overdue. I’m excited for the film, I’m excited for the future of this industry,” shared Dale Noelle, Founder & CEO of TRUE Model Management.
