How to Dress for Success

Dress for Success

How often do you hear someone tell you to ‘dress for success’? How often do they even tell you what that means? The answer is probably something along the lines of ‘never’, and you may be at a loss. As a woman you have far more options than men when it comes to choosing a workplace outfit, and while this can be a gift, it can also be quite the curst.

Let’s be honest, how many times have you found yourself getting irritated that men only need to put on a simple shirt and tie or a suit when they go to work in a professional environment? Let’s be honest, your job as a woman is tough, and we’re not just talking about the wage gap. We’re going to tell you how to dress for success, and it’s not as hard as you think.

Get Noticed! It’s All About Layers

With winter here there’s never been a better time to experiment with layers. One of the worst things you can do is simply wear a single top or something completely monochrome. If you want to succeed you need to be noticed, and sure, your work should speak for itself, but does it, really, REALLY hurt to draw a bit of attention to yourself? We don’t tend to think so. So how do you effectively wear layers? What does it take exactly? Before you can do it effectively, you need to understand the following:

  • Spaghetti straps do not go under tops where they can be visible from the outside – that’s tacky!
  • Choose colors that compliment each other
  • Make sure your layers are visible
  • Match your fabrics!

One of the greatest examples of layering we can give you is the age old example of layering a camisole beneath a low cut scoop neck or v-neck top; you can see the second layer, it’s not too intrusive, and it does a great job of drawing attention to you. In other words, you’re not going to be overlooked in the crowd. One last thing we’d mention from this list is to always match the material. You want your layers to look natural, and if you were to pair say, silk with cotton, you would lose that natural look, and that’s definitely not what you want to go for.

Dress Comfortably

Do you know that old saying .≤Beauty is Pain’? Okay it’s true to an extent but you’re not going to be successful if you don’t dress comfortably, seriously. If you don’t feel comfortable with it, then don’t walk into work every day wearing five inch heels. Will they make your buttocks look a bit more toned? Well, probably, but the more relaxed you feel, the better you’re going to be at your job, there’s just no way around it. High heels do give you an air of authority if work properly, but on most days, you simply aren’t going to need them.

Dress for the Job You Want

The final thing we’re going to say is that you need to dress for the job you want. Sure, you’ve heard this before, but what does it actually mean? It means that you should dress as a professional, and of course keep it within the dress code of your workplace. This doesn’t mean that you can’t be creative – you need to stand out as an individual and you need to be recognized. Don’t worry, there are plenty of outfits and combinations you can try to accomplish it.
