All of Tesla’s seat options are now vegan!
Great news for those wanting a cruelty-free option in their new Tesla! Tesla only sells vegan seats! That’s right, Tesla has removed any mention of real leather and instead offers high quality seats made from synthetic material. But, it must also be noted that the Tesla is not entirely leather-free. The wheel is still wrapped in leather. However, in the past, they have offered to provide a non-leather wheel option upon request from customers who are trying to remove leather entirely from their vehicle.
Tesla desires to “accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.” While many are attracted to Tesla for reasons other than vegan seat covers, the company would like to offer a more eco-friendly choice when it comes to electric cars. Indeed, many choose Tesla because of its overall performance. Others understand the environmental impact that leather has on the environment. Leather is a by-product of the meat industry. Cows cause a negative environmental impact through meat production. How? Meat production can cause pollution through animal methane, waste, and water and land consumption. In fact, a report by Livestock’s Long Shadow said, “the livestock sector is a major stressor on many ecosystems and on the planet as a whole. Globally it is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases and one of the leading causal factors in the loss of biodiversity, while in developed and emerging countries it is perhaps the leading source of water pollution.”
Tesla also understands their demographic; many vegans and vegetarians are also electric car buyers.
Other consumers might be worried that non-leather seats do not perform as well as traditional leather.
However, Tesla’s vegan seats have been getting high marks when it comes to durability and comfortability. So as of today, Tesla has eliminated leather seats completely. Hopefully, Tesla is leading other car manufacturers to follow suit by eliminating the need for leather interiors in their automobiles!
