On June 28th at Casa Del Mar Hotel, celebrity guest, socialites and community leaders lined up on the red carpet to meet Nick Palance. He is the acclaimed Pop-Opera recording artist who created the “Coming Home with Nick & friends” Charity Gala Concert to benefit OPCC, a charity fund raiser auction for the homeless.

Nick Palance mission statement for helping create the event…. “It has been my passion to help those who are being overlooked. When a person hits hard times and becomes homeless, not only do they lose their place to live and position in society, but they also lose their identity, and it is a difficult, if not impossible, thing to come back from. I created this event to raise awareness and bring like-minded people TOGETHER to make a difference and restore hope to those who need it. Let’s take the ‘less’ out of homelessness.”

The reason we were all there, Lilian T. Perez, Deputy Director to Toni G. Atkins Speaker for California State Assembly took over the microphone and lead us all on a heart warming journey about the reasons people become homeless and the radical journey of how OPCC is helping make a difference. And, she presented Certificates of Recognition to John Maceri, Executive Director of OPCC, as well as to Nick Palance, Sue Wong, Dr. Estella Sneider and Romulo Canizales.

We watched an OPCC short film documentary with some of the homeless people they were helping. Proceeds from the gala benefited OPCC (formerly Ocean Park Center), which is the largest social service agency on the Westside of Los Angeles. A non-profit organization headquartered in Santa Monica.

According to the Institute for the study of Homelessness and poverty at the Weingart Center, an estimated 254,000 men, women and children experience homelessness in Los Angeles County during some part of the year and approximately 82,000 people are homeless on any given night.

Nick Palance, referred to as the “American Bocelli,” is known for his romantic and passionate singing took center stage to perform for his guests. He brought the house down with a large selection of his familiar songs and had a few duets that left us speechless. The evening ended with us all dancing until the clock struck midnight.   What a night!

After the event, I caught up with Nick to find out more about this talented and caring man.
