Interview with The Office's Nora Kirkpatrick

The Office airs Thursdays at 9:00pm on NBC with its finale on May 16th. If you also like indie rock, look out for Nora Kirkpatrick touring this summer with her group, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.

At some point in your life, you’ve probably tried to learn to play a musical instrument. I’m sure some of you have even succeeded. But what was the first instrument recommended to you? Piano? Violin? Maybe drums or guitar if you were interested in rock? Having graduated from a conservatory, I have seen many people play more than just their principal instrument. But rarely did I ever see anyone attempt the accordion. Why? Because it’s incredibly difficult to play. This is why I have a lot of respect for Nora Kirkpatrick. Not only is she an accordionist, she also plays other instruments in the group, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros. As well as being a musician, she played Katherine on ABC Family’s Greek and currently plays Dwight’s girlfriend, Esther, on NBC’s hit show, The Office, in the last six episodes of the series. Only Nora Kirkpatrick can make having two jobs look appealing and easy.

Q&A with Nora Kirkpatrick

How did Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros originate and how is it to be one of only two girls in the group?

It started out with Alex, the lead singer, and the band formed as we were getting people together.  He just kept asking more and more friends. He wrote the music so big. We even take more people with us on tour. We do it all live. We never play to tracks.

What is it like to tour with such a large group?

It’s really fun. We have two tour buses for the band and crew. It’s really just a blast. You’re never bored. There’s so many people to learn from and to hang out with. You’re always learning new things. It’s almost easier. In a small band, you get can a little annoyed [with the same few people around you], but it’s almost a blessing to tour in a large group.

Describe your character, Esther, on The Office. What was it like to step into such a big show?

I play Dwight’s girlfriend.  Esther is a farm girl. Dwight runs a big farm. My character grew up next to him on the brussel sprout farm. We had known each other since we were kids. [Our plotline] is about getting to know each other in our adult lives.

Everyone was so kind and welcoming. Everyone was there to work and to do good work. It was just a joy all the time. I made a lot of great friendships. It was lovely.

Are there any other projects that we should look out for?

I’m in a movie that just came out.  It's called "Sexy Evil Genius" with Seth Green and Michelle Trachtenberg.  [Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros] is going to tour around the US and then we’re playing with Mumford and Sons in Europe.  We’re just finishing our third album. It's untitled so far, but it's out this summer.
