Romantic Valentine’s Day Movies
What could be better than curling up next to your significant other and watching a romantic movie this Valentine’s Day? Maybe that’s exactly the type of holiday you need after a long week of work – a lovely night in, great meal, great company, a fire in the fireplace, and a romantic movie.
We definitely have a few recommendations for you if you’re looking for that movie that will inevitably put a smile on your face and leave you with butterflies in the tummy that make you grateful for the love in your own life.
We’ll start with the Classic, Cheesy Romance
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
What could be more charming, more upbeat and romantic, than Audrey Hepburn? In this classic, Hepburn plays a young New York socialite – Holly Golightly – who’s used to receiving positive attention (not to mention payment) from the men in her life. She lives for parties, glamour and wealth on the surface, but deep down she talks about needing something more. She finds her comfort at the infamous Tiffany’s store window, where she eats her breakfast when she needs to feel connected to some comfort other than what her life has become. She meets a struggling writer by chance – Paul – who moves into her apartment building. Over a few encounters, he becomes fascinated by Golightly, and though neither know or understand how, they fall for each other as lifelines and lovers. This movie is cute, funny and simply romantic.
You’ve Got Mail
Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan pair up perfectly for this chick-flick that came out at the very beginning of the “online” era. Hanks and Ryan play business acquaintances with different morals who turn from enemies in business to friends in life. Though their friendship has a rocky beginning with a reluctant Ryan trying to keep her distance, it strengthens as they confide in each other about failed relationships and their own mysterious online friendships that are happening simultaneously. Along the way, Hanks – who quickly develops a romantic interest – figures out something that Ryan won’t know til the end: they’re pursuing each other online. With that, he continues to grow their friendship and to pursue her until one day they decide to meet. If you’re not smiling ear to ear and crying crocodile tears in the closing scene, we’re not sure you have a heart.
50 First Dates
Adam Sandler is known for delivering raucous comedies that are both belly-laugh-worthy and cringe-worthy, and let’s face it… offensive. However, we can count on one hand the times he’s been in movies that make us swoon, and “50 First Dates” is actually one of them. No surprise that Drew Barrymore is his other half in the movie… who doesn’t love her? Sandler plays a party boy who’s swept off his feet by Barrymore’s character. They have the best first date of their lives, and then the issue is uncovered: she has no short term memory. Sandler’s character, as a result, creates a new first date every day as he pursues a girl who keeps forgetting him, until one day he crosses into that long-term memory space (and they both live happily ever after). This movie will make you laugh, cry, and smile, all at the same time!

Some Like it Hot
Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe star in this 1959 romantic comedy about two men that flee the mob by cross-dressing and joining an all-female band disguised as women. You guessed it – there’s plenty of Monroe style teasing along the way, as the guys get glimpses of what life is like on the road with a train full of sexy women. Things get interesting as one of the guys falls for the ukulele player (Monroe), while the other has his eye on a millionaire of the same sex. It’s hard to say whether Some Like It Hot is sexier than it is funny, but one thing is for certain – if you’re looking for something steamy and hysterical… this is your movie.
Eyes Wide Shut
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman take leading roles in this sexy drama thriller where a married New York City doctor commences a dangerous and eerie night-long adventure of sexual and moral discovery, only after his wife admits to an incident that almost led to an affair. Jealousy, sex, scandal and fear will have you cuddled right up to your partner on the couch for the duration of the movie. Anything to get closer… right?
Everyone wants to experience love like Jack and Rose. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet star in this drama that’s true to history, where two strangers from opposite ends of society strike up a romance that’s unquenchable in every way.
Their love is consummated in one of the most unforgettable scenes in any movie to date, and just before disaster occurs. Through the romance, the adventure, and the fear of impending doom, viewers come to learn that Jack and Rose’s love transcends beyond sacrificial love even just hours after its begun.
50 Shades of Grey
Fantasy and ecstasy meet in this movie, widely known as one of the most scandalous flicks of the decade. The premise is simple, and oh-so-pleasing: a beautifully independent yet reserved student meets a mysterious, successful, attractive man who captivates every ounce of her attention. Dakota Johnson plays Ana, the student, who finds herself helplessly attracted to Christian Grey, the successful businessman who has it all, played by Jamie Dornan.
The two take turns expressing their desire for one another, but Grey presents Ana with a choice: it’s all or nothing – he wants her on his terms. Sex, bondage and masochism play a big role in this sensual drama thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat with your partner right by your side.
