And the award season begins! The 2017 Gotham Independent Film Awards awarded the best that indie filmmaking offered this year. The voters, which include industry insiders and film critics, crowned the romance “Call Me By Your Name” and Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” as the big winners of the night.
The event was held Monday evening at New York City‘s Cipriani Wall Street and it was hosted by writer/director John Cameron Mitchell, in a ceremony where prizes and other honors were presented to Hollywood’s A-listers.
The romantic adaptation “Call Me By Your Name”, directed by Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino took home the big prize. The film starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer won the Best Feature and Chalamet won Breakthrough Actor for his heartbreaking performance as the enamored protagonist.
The other major winner was Jordan Peele’s social thriller “Get Out”. The hit film that was embraced by moviegoers and film critics alike won in three categories, including Breakthrough director for Peele, Best Screenplay and the Audience Award. These victories position the film in a great place for the award shows to come, including the Golden Globes where the horror movie is competing to enter the Best Comedy/Musical category.
Dee Ree’s captivating drama “Mudbound” received a special prize honoring the entire ensemble of the film, which included Jason Mitchell, Garrett Hedlund, Carey Mulligan and Mary J. Bilge. Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, one of the award season darlings, won the Best Actress prize for her performance in Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird”, a perfect accolade for the coming of age comedy that during the weekend became the best review film in Rotten Tomatoes history with a perfect 100 score.
The ceremony also included several tributes to great artists and figures including Nicole Kidman, who had a great year with “Big Little Lies”, “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “The Beguiled”, along with Dustin Hoffman, producer Jason Blum, politician and documentarian Al Gore, director Sofia Coppola and cinematographer Ed Lachman.
